Show unveiling of marker honoring Fur Traders by mrs john H weston A meeting of the unveiling of the marker will be held in laketown Lake town ward chapel at 1030 a m tuesday august 81 31 1937 after which the marker will be unveiled this marker is honoring the fur traders T of early days the following vv will ill be present at this meeting dr howard R driggs and major arthur W procter of new york elder george albert smith john D giles dr geo IV middleton and others other of the utah pioneer trails and landmarks As association kosoc I 1 quoting from a letter from carl P russell in government service in the unveiling of the marker near your charming village laketown Lake town you are I 1 think memorializing memorial izing the farsightedness sight edness and industry of mr william ashley of st louis and points west as well as commemorating the pioneer activities of a host of bold characters who even at that time were intimately acquainted with the topography bargers and remarkable assets of what is is now utah in march 1827 mr ashley sent mr sublette with a larty barty from st louis via south pass with the merchandise which was to be disposed of at the bear lake rendezvous with the st louis party went EL a four cannon mounted on a carriage drawn by two mules Jed jedediah ediab smith who had spent the winter of 1826 27 in california traveled to bear lake from the west and came upon lodges of snake indians near salt lake to the bear lake little lake meeting smith hired a horse and guide from these snakes and hurried on to bear lake where ha arrived july 3 1827 smith wrote my arrival caused a considerable bustle in camp for myself and party had been given up as lost A small cannon brought up from st t louis was loaded and fired for a salute lute on july IS 13 1827 smith with will IS 18 me men n and a new outfit of equipment started his return trip to california he traveled via bear river weber river liver utah lake sevier river and the colorado river documents andl indicate that exceptionally large store of furs curs were returned to st louis from this rendezvous some trapper at the bear lake meeting wrote a letter from there regarding his experiences in yellowstone low stone geyser region which appear in the magazine NILES REGISTER for oct 6 1827 Jed jedediah edlah smith also wrote from here to capt william dark clark under date of july 7 1827 recounting his california tour smiths letter was printed in the MISSOURI republican october 11 1827 it is headed beaded little lake of bear river both names little lake and bear lake were used by the fur traders the cannon by the way which went to the bear rake rendezvous was apparently purchased on subletts sublette Sub letts orders and after the bear lake meeting was taken to the fort which had been built at the junction of the ogden and weber rivers |
