on his way down the tournant tournament ent trail raila I 1 by JOHNNY FARREL HEN hugh bradley asked me ato WHEN to be his guest columnist this week that made me smile because hugh I 1 know as much about pounding a typewriter as you do about pounding a golf ball speaking of smiling though a lot of people have asked me why I 1 always seem to be smiling when I 1 get in a tough spot out there on the fairways easy ever since I 1 first started playing golf up in westchester shortly before the war ive told myself to keep smiling for I 1 think the answer to golfing success when youre cheerful and smiling you are relaxed and easy your swing freeze and youre able to keep your club in a flowing groove I 1 can remember standing on the eighteenth green at olympia fields in chicago in 1928 it was one of those typically hot midsummer days in the midwest in front of 4 R me was an eight foot putt bobby 1 jones had just holed out for a birdie and in order to win that thirty six hole hoie playoff A for the national open championship I 1 had to drop that johnny farrel eight footer there was a cr crowd of golf crazed enthusiasts jammed around the green payoff putt Is easy vilen when youre not grim everything hung on that putt I 1 let myself think of what it meant to me do y you ou know hugh what I 1 was thinking of I 1 remembered a story id heard in the locker room the night before the one about the duffer who had a new caddie youve heard that how he kept telling his caddie to pick up those divots divits and when they got back to the clubhouse the caddie turned the duffers bag upside down and looking very seriously as grass chunks tumbled out said here are your divots divits boss but what I 1 want to know is what you are going to do with them that made me laugh as I 1 thought of it I 1 tight and grim and so it was a simple matter to sink that eight footer and win the open crown everybody thinks that was my greatest golfing thrill but it there have been a lot of them and disappointments too but the biggest thrill of all ail but wait a moment let me tell you of some of the higher moments playing in my first f open at inverness in 1920 it was the first for jones and diegel too love ive been in every one since then but ive never felt the same thrill as when I 1 walked up to that first tee I 1 at toledo qualifying in my first british open at troon in scotland in 1922 that was the worst storm ive ever played in and the gales were howling bowling around my head at about ninety miles an hour who was national open champion at the time long jim barnes and inimitable harry vardon all failed to make the grade in the teeth of those blustering winds those are only some of them the greatest of all though was in winning the first prize at la gorce in florida in the winter of 1928 1923 I 1 was way back going into that last round I 1 was the last man in and I 1 knew what I 1 had to get to win and on that stiff par 72 course I 1 turned in a 30 33 63 nine strokes under par to take that prize the biggest in tournament history by a single stroke NOT IN THE BOX SCORE HE wrestling war ts is on again T THE with the dusek brothers crossing toots and thinking
