REAPER Navy Launches New Destroyer I matter Feb. 8, 1929, dolph, Utah, nnder th $tor and Proprietor Business Manager Ter Year in Advance SAN FRANCISCO. Two men are looking out today upon a world they hadnt seen in years, a world they hadnt known since they lost their sight. They owe their regained vision to one of the miracles of modem surgery, in which cornea tissue from dead persons is transplanted to living people. The eyes of Mrs. Margaret Carr, who died at 80 years, restored sight to Reverend U. E. Harding of Portland, Ore., and Arthur Morton, 21, a pianist of Sacramento, Calif.. I can see, Reverend Harding said when the bandages were removed. I can see your hand. I see colors. I know what you look like. He was still blind in one eye, but from the other he could see for the first time in 43 years. When surgeons took the dressing from Mortons eyes he stared for a moment at the face above him, then said, Things are blurred. But I can see. Then he fainted. Morton lost his sight in 1932. LIBERAL PAYMENT They had decided to marry, and walked into the manse. The clergy man performed the ceremony, says the Montreal Herald, and after wards gave the bridegroom a word or two of advice. Thank ye a thoosand times, mon, the bridegroom returned, ferIm awfu sorry I canna vently. pay ye as muckle as I wad like, sir, but Thats all right thats all right, interrupted the clergyman. If yell tak me doon to your gas meter, continued the other, Ill show ye hoo tae fix it so it wanna register. Stopped Short The case came to an end and the judge sentenced the man in the dock to a long term of imprisonment. The following day the prisoners lawyer called on his client in prison to arrange an appeal. Youre a fine lawyer, you are," said the prisoner, contemptuously. Why all through the case you kept saying Your Honor, I object, bul when the judge sentenced me to ten years, you didnt say a word. Whj didnt you object to that? Queer how three people came Philadelphia together, isnt it? Bide the Time The village fire brigade stood by, watching the top story of a building blazing merrily. When questioned by an onlooker about their inactiv- ity, the captain replied, blandly: Our hoses aint any too powerful, mister. Well ave a better chance when the fire gets to the second floor I Poor Ma Mother (from next room): Tommy, for goodness sake switch off that loudspeaker. That womans voice goes through me! The navy department has revealed that the posdivsible depth to which deep-se- a ers can descend safely has been extended to 500 feet by the use of synthetic air. World record sea dives to 500 feet under t artificial conditions and to more than 400 under actual conditions have been made by navy divers using standard rubber diving suits and a new mixture of helium and oxygen for breathing purposes. Navy officials said the new synthetic atmosphere is the result of more than 10 years research. They said that the oxygen-heliumixture considerably advances the art of deep diving and has no harmful effects upon the diver. The depth was attained by Master Divers J. H. McDonald, Las Animas, Colo., and William Badders, Annapolis, Md., in the Washington navy yard diving tank. Sea conditions were simulated by applying air pressure to the water in the tank equivalent to sea pressure at 500 feet. ot INTERSTATE BRICK CO.
