Show EXTENSION NEWS NOTES OUTLINES CROPS FOR contracted WHEAT ACREAGE farmers who signed wheat contracts are now making plans to comply with the provisions of the AAA n holding 1 1 per clit c lit of their average wheat acreage out of wheat production the following analysis of the problem by aaron F bracken superintendent superintend ent of the nephi dry farming fanning substation sub station utah agricultural experiment station has been designed t to 0 aid farmers in managing their contracted acted acreage Accord according iii to the wheat allotment contract that land which Is not sown to this cereal during 1931 1934 and 1033 cannot ie be used tor for the production of any nationally produced agricultural product offered tor for sale As an alternative however the contracted land may be seeded either to food crops for home consumption or to feed crops for th the e production of liv livester lives estek and livestock products which also must be used only for home consumption by the family on oil the particular farm faran where produced A subsequent ruling g now allows for pasturing of farm animals on the land provided the animals and the animal products are not offered directly or indirectly for sale if the attempt t to control production of wheat through reduced acreage c continues outi tor for only a two year peri period od a majority of the dry farmers will merely follow the contracted land where this arrangement is followed it would be advantageous to allow the area to re remain in fallow only two seasons then continue the same procedure with another area of equal size in some of the better dry farm areas forage and inter tilled crops may be used in place of fallow on the irrigated lands where the wheat fileds are sin small all in acreage any of the legumes such as alfalfa red clover sweet or alsike alseike clover and any of t the he gra grasses ases including timothy orchard grass slender and crested wheat grass may be seeded singly or in mixtures for seed pasture or hay production provided there is no infringement rin gement on the terms of the con tract bract seed cannot be produced on contracted land however it is possible to sow any crop tor for seed growing and later when re ready ady to N nar bear ar to exchange this area of laud land for another of equal size alfalfa sweet I 1 clover smooth brome grass crested and slender wheat grass are among the forages best adapted to the dry lands present indications point to a good demand for smooth brome grass timothy orchard grass slender and crest ed wheat grass alsike alseike red and sweet clover to meet the seed needs of the government in ill the erosion and marginal land problem in addition to forage crops which the irrigated lands as well as on some of the favored dry land areas vegetable ge crops may be sown for home consumption this mn can be done provided the home garden garde area is not shifted to the contracted land corn carrots cabbage tomatoes peas beans potatoes or any other adaptable crop of a similar nature which may be consumed direct from the garden canned or stored for winter use could be included under the provisions ot of the contract corn beans peas and potatoes are best adapted to the dry farm lands planting of a 1 woodlot would serve a lit highly illy useful purpose on irrigated lands as well a as s on certain selected dry farm arms areas where the rainfall is favorable this would meet the terms of the allotment contract and also be in direct line with a tree planting program now being fostered by the govern ment trees would not only provide provid e windbreaks ind breaks firewood shade aud and shelter for farm animals but could depended upon a few years hence t to 0 supply timber of good quality for general farm use tills avils two year contract also allows a fine opportunity to meet the terms bernis of the wheat acreage reduction program and at the same time to rid fields of noxious weeds thorough ell cul tl ti at intervals of every week or ten days will wall almost completely eradicate any perennial perena lal plant of this type |
