Show THE RICH COUNTY REAPER, RANDOLPH, UTAH RICH COUNTY REAPER' SUBSCRIPTION $2.00 Per Year in Advance Win. E. Marshall, Editor and Prop. matter Feb. Entered as second-clas- s 8, 1929, at the post office Randolph, Utah, under the Act of Mar. 3. 1879. THE UTAH BRIEFS CULL LOAFER HEN EARLY IN SEASON Nonlayers Kept Until Fall Bring Very Small Price. BEST BREEDS OF HORNLESS CATTLE A hen sold in June will bring In more than a hen sold in October, often say. To test the truth of that statement, particularly as it affects culling the loafers, poultry extension specialists at the Ohio State university present this example on the basis of last years prices: A Leghorn hen weighs four pounds She was worth 28 cents a pound or $1.12, on June 7 last year. On October 11 this same hen was worth 19 cents a pound, or a total of 76 cents. She was worth 36 cents less simply because of a lowering of price. It would be necessary to make a profit of 36 cents on that bird in the four months from June to October to pay for her depredation in value. Prices generally go that way every year, the university poultrymen point out, hence the necessity for culling the loafer hen early. Another reason, says Paul Zum-brone of the specialists, is that culling lowers your feed costs. That Leghorn hen would eat approximately 25 pounds of feed in the four months, which would cost from 60 to 70 cents. The hen stops laying the first of June. She is not sold because the flock owner Is too busy, or it is thought she will lay later in the summer. Summer comes and the hen is still out of production. October comes and the hen Is sold to make room for pullets. On this one hen the poultry-ma- n has lost 36 cents for depredation in price, and 60 cents for feed. poui-trym- en Aberdeen-Angu- s Noted for Their Beef Qualities. First and foremost among the breeds of cattle which are naturally hornless must be classed the Aberdeen-AnguAll black except for an occasional s. small patch of white on the belly, these animals are noted for their beef qualities. Docile by nature they make good gains on fattening rations. Aberdeen-Angu- s cattle are not generaly so large as the other two beef breeds, Shorthorns, and Herefords, bulls seldom weighing more than a ton, while cows average about 1,400. Another polled, or hornless breed which resembles the Angus is the Galloway. This breed is also black in color, the main diiference between it and the Angus .being the long curly hair. Slightly smaller than the Angus, the Galloway has often defeated the former in killing tests at the fat stock shows in England. Both breeds had their origin in Scotland but the Aberdeen-Angus is widely distributed in England, the United States and Canada, while few Galloway herds are to be found on this continent, due probably to their slow maturing qualities. The Red Polled breed of cattle are noted for the production of both beef and milk. They are red in color, midway in size between the Angus and the Shorthorn. Originating in the southern part of England they are becoming popular in the middle western United States and in western Canada, where many strong herds have been built up. Both the Shorthorn and the Hereford breeds of beef cattle have established herd books for some of their breeders who have herds of Polled animals. Sprung originally from a sport, i. e. an animal born without horns from horned parents, or in some cases graded up from native hornless cattle, these cattle retain all the usual characteristics of their parent breeds but have added advantage from a beef raising point of view of being without horns. It has been suggested that the time may come when all breeds of cattle may be bred without horns. full-grow- n Shade for Porkers Is Most Profitable Plan Giving your pigs a cool, shady place in which to lie during the hot sum-.mmonths will put pounds of pork on their backs and extra dollars in o, Daily Feed for Young Ducks Varies Greatly The amount of feed needed each day for young ducks varies as much as does their growth. Their growth averages a half pound a week, and to make this increase of weight each week requires an additional quantity of feed over the preceding one. The rule is. feed each meal what they will eat up dean with a relish, and do not allow them to linger over the feed trough. It is better they should have not enough than too much, as they will he in a much better condition to relish the next meal. One thing is considered to be of as much importance as the feed, and that is removing the feed left over and thoroughly cleaning the troughs after each meal. This Is scrupulously attended to by successful duck raisers." er your pocket. A pig cannot be expected to put on the cheapest and fastest gains if he is compelled to spend summer days in a hot, stuffy, dusty shed or depend on the north side of the shed for shade. If you have trees in your hog lot the shade problem is solved. If you have no trees a shade may be built cheaply. A little time, a few waste posts and lumber and some woven wire are needed. Set a post at each corner. If the shade is large it is well to set a couple of posts along the sides also. Nail planks or saplings to the posts. Next throw a few boards or limbs of trees across the top at regular intervals. Then stretch the woven wire fencing across the top. Weeds or hay may then be thrown on the woven wire roof. Build the shade away from the buildings so the air and wind can move through it freely. It should be high enough so the wind can easily pass underneath. Live Stock Hints Inexpensive Shed Is Suitable for Ducks Any slied will do for a duck house provided it is draft proof. It does not have to be very warm. It would be a good idea to have a concrete bottom which should be covered with shavings. A few shavings should be spread in the corners so as to give the ducks a dry bed. For ten ducks and a couple of drakes a house ten feet square would answer. If it were 12 by 20 It would be much better. You could build a shed roof and have one or two windows occupying about of the south elevation. It would be well to have these windows slide up or down or sideways, keeping them open a little bit at all times even if It is cold, for ventilation. one-fourt- Not all pigs that manage to survive are necessarily profit makers. recRegistered cattle with ords in their pedigrees are bringing the most money. long-tim- e Dont feed animals worth keeping poorly because they are not producing; feed them and give them a chance.
