Show oat varieties res resist I 1 st disease tests made by government to determine susceptibility to disorder prepared by fc the united department of agriculture As A the first step in q pr to reduce the annual loss lass suffered buffered by oat farmers on account of rusts the united states department of Agri agrical cul tare lure in operation cooperation co with 6 expert experiment hue has comple completed teC tests extending over ever R P period of five years yeara to determine varlet varieties les resistant to stern stem rust incidentally observations also wore made on the thai resistance of these varieties to crown rust and the smuts of oats an an important fact brought out by the tests Is that there seems to be no relation between resistance to stem rust and resistance to crown rust some of the varieties mosi most re distant to one rust were least resistant to the other observations on the smuts another important group of oat diseases indicate that there Is also no relation between smut re sis and rust resistance in the varieties tested resistant varieties Varl etlea the varieties which were most re distant to stein rust during the five year period are lovold hajara rich luch land minota X white tartar white russian white tartar green mountain anthony and eillien Eil EtI liln varieties least affected by crown rust were green mountain lied rustproof I 1 lowar 0 durt burt selection and Rua kura was the only variety which appeared to be resistant to the smuts and both of the rusts varieties most resistant to the smuts under the conditions of these experiments were markton barkton Mark ton red lied isusi rustproof fulghum and hajara those moderately modern tely resistant to the smuts tn in elude clude burt bur richland Sll SlI vermine selection and lowar varl vari etie elleg s extremely susceptible were white tartar green mountain and anthony some of the varieties were highly resistant to one group of disease producing fungi and very susceptible to the other markton barkton and fulghum lium were very resistant to both smuts but extremely susceptible to both rusts red rustproof also was highly resistant to both smuts and to crown rust but was susceptible to stem rust on the other hand green mountain was susceptible to both smuts but resistant to both rusts smuts prevented the smuts can be prevented by seed Area treatment truent but those in charge of the tests feel that it would be highly hi h desirable to combine rust resistance and smut resistance in one variety if possible to do this will perhaps necessitate a detailed study of physiologic form forin specialization in the smuts and rusts peculiar to oats A detailed report of the tests hns has been published by the united states department of agriculture in coop co op aeration with the minnesota agricultural experiment station the publication Is technical ni bulletin T field studies on oil the rust resistance res estat e of oat varieties copies of the hie bul letin letan may be obtained from talie office of anft department of agriculture washington D C as lony long ns as there Is a supply available for free |
