Phillips since 1875, . 1 anti-a- rations used for feeding our hogs must be supplemented with a mineral mixture is a fact upon which ail investigators agree. A typical statement relating to this subject was recently made by A. Severson of the North Dakota experiment station, as follows: The ordinary grain ration does not contain the variety nor a proper amount of mineral matter required to rapidly develop a large frame for early maturing hogs. One can expect a considerable percentage of weak, undersized or unthrifty pigs when no mineral mixture is used. Without mineral matter sows are apt to go down In the back, become weak In their pasterns and many times become so week they cannot get up when nursL ing a large litter of pigs. The milk drains heavily on the skeleton of the sow to supply the proper amount of mineral to the milk. The constant addition of mineral matter to the sows ration will avoid this ailment. Hogs are more apt to suffer from mineral deficiency than other classes Uce HANFORDS of live stock. Such products as tankage and skim milk are rich In mineral matter, but AB falm Mllwiaj U fttmJ jam any far tin under average farm conditions they first bottW if lot nitci are. seldom, if ever, fed in large enough quantities to supply the Conceit may pull a man up, but amount needed. Phillips Milk of Magnesia To Cool a Burn Balsam of Myrrh Swine Grading Proves Valuable in Marketing t . grading data is a reliable agency for showing up many of the leaks which are prone to creep into the marketing end of our swine InFor example, it has been dustry. pointed put that the percentage of heavy hogs has decreased since the Inception of hog grading. The percentage of select bacon hogs, which was below 12 per cent for the whole of Canada at the commencement of hog grading, has risen gradually to 17 per cent. This improvement has been accomplished through closer attention to breeding and feeding; because of the data revealed to farmers through this policy, and also because the policy provided for payment on a quality basis. Beef Herds Maintained During Severe Weather : Beef herds may be best maintained during the winter with a legume hay in the ration. Liberal use of alfalfa hay, according to practical feeders, helps Insure a healthy .calf crop. Experimentally the fact has been proven that steers carried thiough the winter on alfalfa hay make faster gains than fed steers the following year on pasture. An experimental trial comparing prairie hay with 'alfalfa showed that the prairie hay gains as large as the were' but alfalfa gains. ' fa d Is Your Rest te overlooks a nice profit and lowers the production of his cows. The dairy cow will drink 100 pounds of water daily if it is located where she can get it at least twice daily and It is not too cold. A fresh cow will drink three or four times as much as a stripper or dry cow. In cold winter weather a cow will not drink that much water if turned out but once a day and she has to walk to a pond or tank to drink. Furthermore, when a large amount of cold water is drunk in cold weather It must be raised to the body temperature of the cow, and to do this the cow burns the feed nutrients which were intended to produce milk and : maintain her body. A cow giving 35 pounds of milk a day produces in that milk what is known as 10.4 therms of energy. : To produce the same number of therms in the form of useful work, a team of two horses would have to work steadily : for eight hours. As the only way a cow can obtain energy to put Into her milk is through the feed she eats, her feed must be highly nutritious and fe-- in sufficient quantities so that her body requirements as well as her full needs for maximum milk production are met. The successful dairy farmer bases his winter feeding program on an abundance of legume roughage such as alfalfa or other legume bay, and corn silage. So that he may be sure to bave these roughages available next winter be is already making his plans fur a substantial 'creage in alfalfa or one of the other legumes for hay this spring. An acre for each cow in milk will grow enough alfalfa hay to keep these cows well supplied with the very best dry roughage from &U. fall to early spring. The growing of about one acre and a half of the other legumes will be required to keep a mil king cow well supplied with hay during the same period. Now is the time to plan for next winter. In winter feeding, hay is usually fed at rate of 1 to 1 pounds for each 100 pounds the cow weighs. Silage Is generally fed at the rate ot .2 to 3 pounds for each 100 pounds of the animals weight. Grain should ulways be fed according to the cows milk production. The larger breeds, such as the Ayreshire, Brown Swis- - and Holstein, art fed one pound ol grain to each 3 to 4 pounds of milk produced daily. The smaller breeds, as the Guernseys and Jerseys are usually fed grain at the rate of pound to each 3 pounds of milk produced daily. . . lf If there was any such thing as styles in silo building, it would be appropriate to say that the slender figure la silos Is coming into style. The tendency seems to be toward less diameter and more height, and if a large amount of silage Is needed to build two small ones rather than one silo of great diameter. i Eight, ten and twelve-fosilos are each year becoming more common. These small structures make a silo a practical investment for herds of tea or more dairy cows, or for two or three loads of beef steers. Ten cows, for example, will eat about two inches of silage per day from an eight-foo- t inches silo and about one and from a silo ten feet in diameter. ot March Farrowed Pigs J; j Marketed in Winder ; . January, February, and early March farrowed pigs are probably 50 per cent marketed, but due to corn being high in price there are many pigs lacking the finishing touchesCorn and tankage are rather high prices, but the redeeming feature if the situation is that hogs are also fajr priced. If the pigs are thrifty, fre from worms, lice, and mange, and are fed a well balanced ration there Is no doubt but that they will make, a good return on the feed consumed.
