All beets will have been delivered by the end of Dogs and cats, favorite household pets as they are, are attacked by more species of parasites than most animals. In a recent article written for the Veterinary Alumni Quarterly, Dr. Emmett VV. Price, of the United States' Department of Agriculture, says these two animals have been reported as hosts for about 475 species of parasites, some of which affect both, and some only one o( the animals. Aside from the high mortality in dogs due to parasitic Infestation, Doctor Price says, there are other points which should not be minimized. Some of the species which occur In dogs may also infest man, either in their adult or larval stages, such infestations frequently proving fatal. , Several varieties of fleas are known to be carriers of bubonic plague, Doctor Price says, and one of the tapeworms of man passes one stage of its life cycle in dogs. Fleas are also believed to be carriers of infantile r, a tropical protozoon disease. The dog is also Infested by a lung fluke which may be identical to the species causing fatal Illness In man. The present-dapractice of shipping dogs from one part of the country to another for shows or for competition in field trials affords an excellent opportunity for the spread of canine parasites, Doctor Price points out. For some of the parasitic Infestations of dogs and cats, veterinary science has developed effective remedies. For many, however, no remedy is known which will kill the parasite without killing the host as well. six-inc- " ? Hog Flu Attacks Take; Heavy Toll Each Year- - Attacks of hog flu on brood sows and fattening shoats take a heavy toll every year with the coming of cold and stormy weather. Unlike cholera investigations, studies of flue in hogs have not yet revealed the exact cause of the disease. Live stock specialists find from observation and experience that certain precautions in caring for the herd will greatly lessen the danger of sickness and death from flu. One of the common troubles on many farms, these men find, Is overcrowding in the hog house. Hogs compelled to pile up become too hot and the building Will likely be damp and steamy. When the animals go out into the cold the following morning they suffer chills, their resistance to disease Is lowered, and they are more susceptible to organisms ever present In the respiratory system which investigators believe spread hog flu. , ptva Solemnity mid cameras; the overseas men lean Upon a Springfield pattern and behold another gleam at Hampshire marble fades, disminarets Turn into misty valleys and the muddy road to Metz. More Interest among poultry raisers and small flock owners centers around the fall and winter season than at any other time of the year. Many flocks of chickens are ruined by lack of knowledge In caring for their winter quarters, picking out the right fowls and keeping them in shape for the long winter season to follow. One of the greatest drawbacks of the small raiser is keeping their birds free from vermin, lice and different parasites which Infest the chicken quarters. The owner Is besieged with, different 'kinds of literature on Als subject, some too expensive to try and others not practical for their use. In order to raise chickens profitably one must have building material that will not use up all the income received. In the feeding line your feed man can, in most cases, sell you feed of the right kind at the right price. In the disinfectant line everybody has a different method and generally too expensive for the average small raiser. In this line perhaps the best is none too high, but several have been tried and proved successful. Take a full handful of tobacco stems and soak In luke warm water for one hour, drain and use the water adding pint of kerosene and one gallon of water. Spray just before chickens go to roost. If tobacco stems are not obtainable, use smoking tobacco, a small package the same way. If too bothersome to soak tobaccQ get nicotine at the drug store or nursery and use two teaspoonfuls to the same proportions as tobacco. To be sure you are getting results, place a sheet of paper on the dropping board after spraying and If the chickens have vermin yon will see them drop off onto the paper. (pool. The fall pigs consumed 422.3 pounds of meal for every 100 pounds of pork produced and required 224 days to reach a finished average weight of 172.8 pounds per head.
