Effective Way to Fight Quack Grass CATTLE LICE TAKE HEAVY DAIRY TOLL Plow Shallow in Fall, and Drag Frequently. battle may single cripple .quack grass temporarily, but victory comes from continual sniping and strategy rather than from heavy fighting, according to, H. B., Hartwig of the New York State College of Agriculture. The weed has fleshy creeping roots and when these roots are cut and covered with earth they sprout like so many potato eyes. In addition, the plant grows seeds. With these two ways of spreading quack grass maintains itself persistently once it is seeded, he explains. The first move in the- campaign Is to plow shallow In the fall. The ground is then dragged, and the dragging is repeated often enough to keep the green leaves from showing. Do not disk, Mr. Hartwig, warns, for disking cuts and buries the root pieces and only spreads the quack. When the quack is dragged often enough and no leaves appear the plants have no opportunity to store food and the continued dragging helps starve and weaken the plants. The exposure to sunshine also helps the starving A hard-foug- ALL-NIGH- T Eradicate the Pest Before Stimulates the Production of Winter Eggs. Heavy Infestation. Cattle lice, which run up a heavy toll in the form of reduced milk yields and slackened gains, are likely to be more troublesome this winter than usual, according to a report to the University of Illinois by an assistatnt entomologist of the Illinois state natural history survey. There has been a gradual increase in louse population on dairy animals and other stock in the past two years, owing largely to lack of proper control measures. Fortunately, the lice are not hard to eradicate until a heavy infestation Is allowed to develop. From the standpoint of cheapness, availability and effectiveness the best treatment is raw linseed oil. Boiled or refined linseed oil is likely to injure 'the skin and should not be used. The oil may be applied with a handbrush or in the case of d animals, with a wad of cloth. A brush having uneven bristles is best adapted to this work. A second treatment should be given two weeks following the first and then monthly applications should be made until spring. The oil should process. Tests have shown that 20 pounds of garbage will produce a pound of grain in hogs. Analyses of garbage on a dry weight basis give the following results: Protein. per cent; car bohydrates. per cent; fat. per cent; ash, per cent. The danger in feeding garbage is In having some injurious substance present such as glass, paper, soap, sawdust, etc., or in exposing the hogs to hog cholera through the presence of rinds from hogs that had the disease. Hogs fed on garbage should be immunized against hog cholera, and some arrangement should he made so that objectionable substances will not be put in the garbage. The garbage is sometimes cooked, to prevent disease, but this makes it difficult for hogs to pick out and leave injurious substances that they will not eat when it is not cooked. 15-1- 31-0- 8 9 10-3- 13-3- 3 0 Safety Bull Pens The Orange County (Va.) The bureau of dairy Industry United States Department ot Agricul fure, asks, Are there other associations that can duplicate this record?" If there are, the bureau would like to hear from them. This report means that ail the herd sires in this association are being kept under conditions which should insure long breeding life, as well as safety for the herd owner and his family. safe-keep- Agricultural Squibs The smaller the keel or breast bone of a fowl, the less breast meat. It brings certain problems that need unrelentng attention. The act of bearing young requires great sacrifices on the part of mothers. It brings about rapid and extreme changes in the physical body of the mother. Instinctively the mother is willing to make extreme sacrifice for her young. She is not always physically fit or capable of doing so. Heifers calving for the first time should be watched carefully as they approach calving. Breeding dates are Most heifers will bring essential. their calves along without help. What they need is clean, sanitary surroundings, the right feeding before and after calving, and some attention to their udders. Heifers that need help in calving should not be denied the advantage of the help of one who understands what to do and how best to How does the rooster know when to crow, asks a correspondent of the Rural referring to the recently advocated practice of lighting the henhouse all night. According tc a bulletin from the Ohio experiment New-Yorke- r, station (Bulletin 47C) this lighting has proven a great help In getting winter eggs. It is an extension of the idea in morning or evening lighting and Its trial came about through the use of natural gas lighting by an Ohio poultryman, who found it impracticable to turn the gas on and off at the necessary intervals, so let it burn. The results were such that the Ohio station conducted some controlled lighting experiments with and, in the bulletin referred to, gives the following conclusions: The evi dence indicates that lighting is the most effective way fully to realize the value of artificial light for winter layers. The supposed 111 effects from unrestricted use of artificial lighting failed to materialize. Pullets or hens so lighted laid more eggs than those without light or with morning light at 4 a. m., though the latter laid more eggs in the spring. No ill effects upon fertility or of eggs resulted ; the light proved especially valuable in bringing slow maturing, or inferior pullets into production ; it was effective both for the prevention of a fall or early winter molt and bringing about recovery of production In pullets that had started to molt in October. September molted hens with light laid 42 per cent more eggs and consumed 10 per cent more feed from November 13 to March 4 than did a like group of hens without light. A secondary effect was a suggestion of possibilities In prevention of theft when the poultry quarters were lighted through the night all-nig- all-nig- Water which has had the chill rfr moved from It will be consumed more readily by dairy cows in winter and will cause heavier milk production, according to C. A. Smith, Colorado State college. Every 100 pounds of milk contains 87 pounds water. In order to produce the maximum quantity of milk a cow must consume large amounts of water, Smith says. It has been found that producing cows consume much more water than dry cows. They will not drink much water when they have to break the Ice, but drink large quantities of water if the chill is removed. A small tank heater will do the work at a very small cost. DAIRY NOTES Whole milk will be delivered daily or twice a day while cream will likely be delivered just two or three times a week. Every 48 hours is better unless conditions for holding are very good. Continuous testing for production in dairy herds provides the only means of Intelligently weeding out poor cows and Improving the milking ability of the herd.
