Show GYPSUM FOR SEVIER prominent business men form company will develop one of most important industries in intermountain country plans are now under way for the development of a I 1 huge plaster paris pans indu industry try in sevier county an industry which bids fair to become one of the greatest of its kind in the it has long been knon known n to many mani of the citizens of the county thit theme thee are arc valuable deposits of gypsum in the mountains east and northeast of richfield and in fact the matter of arcet ing a mill his received consideration from time to tini time during the past ten years but the prospects were levei before so bright as they are at present for or a number of prominent business men from various parts of the state have now dow banded the together under the name of the jumbo plaster cement company for the purpose of getting the money out of the huge gypsum dykes northeast of town the personnel of the corporation gives assurance that the project will soon be carried to a successful issue among the offic officers erb and stockholders stockholder of the corporation may be mentioned the following judge ch chidester I dester president Per ferdinand dinand henry henry and A K hansen As is the case in most lines of business the success of this undertaking will depend for the most part on supply and demand and it is said that in this instance there is no doubt about either Acco according iding to information from some borne of the other western estern mills they have ahda always s been from to si months 0 behind time in filling their order 1 there is absolutely no question as to the supply and nail ability of gypsum last tuesday judge chidester took I 1 part of men from richfield to see suma some of the corporations prop eit ane workmen are doing continued DuEd from birst page samples of the crude m interial were sent to the state chemist where they were found to be 99 43 per cent pure heretofore but few deposits have been discovered that tested higher than 96 per cent and this is an indication of what may be expected when operations begin the dyke on which aich the preliminary work is being done is approximately 75 feet wide on the surface and will probably be found to be at least feet wide when it is entirely uncovered it extends to the top of the mound about feet above the workings and can readily be traced in a northeasterly direction for a distance of nearly a mile where it merges into the main dyke it would could be difficult to imagine more accessible acce amble deposits than these the elements hae removed the dirt from the gypsum and carried it into the valley leaving great mountains of the very best material for the making of plaster parts pans about a mile northeast of the point where here work is being done there is a deep gull which cuts the main deke at right angles it shows that the dyke is approximately feet wide and considerably higher than the dyke to which the company will confine its first efforts ibis main da dac ke has been traced to lost creek a distance of at least six si miles considering the fact that these ate aie only two of the dykes and that the mountains in this vicinity are literally mountains of gilum it may safely be said that the supply of crude m eteri LI is practically inexhaustible haus baus tible of churbe courbe there are other bilings besides supply and demand which must be taken into consideration and one of the principal questions is that in regard to the accessibility of the crude material here the company is also fortunate for there is in an easy grade from the sevier rier ner to the grisum deposits the company is planning to build its mill on the bank of the rier and operate its plant with water power thus reducing its cost of operation to the minimum the site s lecter for the mill is about one and a half miles from the point where de dc elopement elop ment work was begun here the company proposes to eielt a mill at a cost of from to 40 which will have a daily capacity of tons but it is the intention of the directors to handle only about tons per day during the first few months the method of cari canning ing the gypsum from the quarry to the mill lias has not yet been determined upon but it is possible that this will be done with tr friction engines Itis it is understood that this method of transportation will soon be tried at levan and if it is found successful it will doubtless be adopted bv the local company if this method is found practicable it will be possible to haul baul 50 tons by making one trip with the engine it is thought that sufficient water vater power to operate the mill can be obtained at a ely small expense by constructing ting a dam a short distance up the river by doing this and digging a canal it will be possible to get a fall of fifteen feet which A will furnish all the power necessary the mill will aill be about a half balf mile from the railroad and no difficulty will be encountered in reaching it with a spur track it is estimated that the cost of producing and delivering will be approximately 8 per ton the product is selling at from 9 50 to to 13 per ton the market will be limited entirely to the west gypsum has other besides that of making plaster paris pans it is an excellent fertilizer and can be made to a prominent part in reclaiming some of the alkali lands in sevier valley it is also used in the manufacture of cement the companas comp anys development work nork is being done dundei the direction of lorenzo nielson an experienced miner following is a report of
