cheers from the departing hosts Scandinavian ns from all over the tate state were gathered in richfield last saturday sunday and monday the occasion was the annual conference of that hardy race which has placed a big part in the reclamation of utah and chith hn h has brought to this country the brain and brawn of the th norsemen norseman Nor semen in the fight for the winning of the west when the train pulled in from the north last saturday afternoon there was an immense crowd waiting at the depot A band com composed poRed of members from redmond richfield and elsinore was in attendance and gave spirited music as a welcome to the visitors the committee on arrangements was on hand an anu piloted the visitors to the tabernacle where they were nere assigned signed aR to the homes of the people of richfield prepared to receive them when this was accomplished a task tak ta k of no mall proportions there was a lull pending the arrival of the hour for the band concert at 8 there was a deluge of rain which drove the musicians to cover after two to or three selections had been rendered the rain continued for several hours and the visitors were compelled to reman indoors for the evening the tabernacle where th s sessions of the conference were to be held was profusely decorated with the national flags of denmark norway and swed en and with the folds of old glory over all in front of the tabernacle was a neatly designed arch on chich floated the flags of scandinavia and old glory the ft N hole wreathed in bunting and bearing the vord ord en cn in bright letters over which hovered the american eagle 11 J hansen designed the arch and chris meyers did the artistic work the whole was be decked with electric lights the work of tom brown bron n and it looked imposing at night when the lights were turned on SUNDAY MORNING the first session of the conference con ferenze was held at 10 on sunday morning with simon christensen presiding the scandinavian choir under the direction of fred fjeldsted was in attendance and furnished excellent music for each session in the mother tongue the first offering was kom dog all store amaia and prayer was offered by JI Jensen the choir then sang bang fader vor paa hillens trone simon christensen welcomed the visitors to the sevier valley with a few well chosen words mayor heber C christensen delivered the keys of the city into the hands of the visitors in a short but fervent address C C A christensen one of the first men to accept mormonism in D denmark c frimark was called to address the con conference conferee feren e he told of the methods of in the th early days of the church in denmark C L larsen larsell of logs logan n and mrs airs stevens of ephraim two of the early members 0 ol 01 i the church in denmark ilso told of their experiences when mormonism ww was first taught in their native ind 0 H berg of prove made I 1 short address in walh h he explained d how hoin the mormons cormons came to utah and made spirit of brotherhood which prevailed among the latter day saints no matter where jhc thc were located he be told of the good accomplished at the late G A R encampment when ds da from the cast were in suffering the services closed with the choir singing kivee sees ig jen the attendance at this meeting was SUNDAY AFTERNOON this session opened by the choir singing nu zion kalstein kal Ocal sein and braer was offered by C K hansen the choir then rendered for jorden frem at af koas sprang the sacrament was administered under the direction of bishop heber C christensen during which cin an offertory was given on the organ orean president W H Seeg mider was the first speaker in the afternoon session he talked in english and expressed his pleasure in meeting so many visitors who aho had grown old in the service which he hid devoted so much of his life to 10 he pointed to the progress that had been made in this valley since it was firpi ed he said pres young had utter ed i that this valle would sustain people he was waa blessed with the spirit of tongues at the gathering of the scandinavians in elsinore EI a few jears ers ago and bould understand all that was said the two das daas of their vold there were 1020 present at this meeting SUNDAY EVENING an interesting meeting was held on sunday evening in which the singing ind and addresses were all given in english this was arranged because apostle A H lund had to leave on monday morning after the singing of two congregational hymns pres J S horne home R D young and pres C N lund of the north sanpete stake addressed the meeting for a short time pres A H lund related that the saints came to utah in 47 and in 49 eldies were sent out to preach the gospel in the world he referred to a prophecy uttered by the Pro lipet joseph smith shortly after the first baptism of scandinavians scandinavian in illinois Illino ib that the time would come when thousands of saints would come from the scandinavian countries he referred to lo an the visitors the first was a band concert given on sunday evening on the tabernacle laa lawn n there vere over a thousand persons gathered on the lawn and on main street to hear the program the band was composed of musicians from redmond richfield and elsinore and although little time had bad been given for preparation the music rendered wai wa appreciated three operatic selections and a number of marches comprised the program and the audience enjoyed the m URIC on monday night the lower loer floor of the tabernacle wis wig well filled with an appreciative audience fred fjeldsted carrie marquardson nellie bean dr L L noyes elvira jensen jenen and a quartets of ladies mrs airs andrew Has mussen mrs airs charles ni isen juanita nielsen and lidia bean were the vocalists ind their efforts were vere appreciated mrs airs eleinor heppler placed a brilliant piano solo simon christensen and C N lund of silina contributed reid ings ing tho former in scandinavian these were excellent ee ellent numbers on the the band played a selection from william tell the concert closed with the qurience ludi ence singing Ar america led by G al jones THE FRUIT FESTIVAL A committee under the direction of N C poulsen and 11 S chritensen prepared a fruit festival on the court house lawn lan As s soon as the afternoon meeting was dismissed the visitors ind friends madl made their w ly to that spot and melons grapes peaches and tomatoes in abundance were nere distributed it is estimated tint that between 1200 and 1500 people were served with all the fruit aney could eat it was a hilarious event and good will ind joa ai pr evaded the scene this was one of the events of the conference that was nas most enjoyed the visitors were ere as hippy as a band of school children THE DEPARTURE the visitors left on tuesday morning nothing but words cords of praise could be heard on all sides for richfield and its people one old fellow with ith the snows of winter on his hend head mounted the platform at the depot just before the train pulled out and delivered himself of on n eulogy for richfield which was nas rt received with shouts and cheers bi the enthusiastic crowd all declared taisto this to have been the banner scandinavian gathering of the state and if richfield abrain undertakes a state gathering there will aill be a large attendance when the train left hundreds
