Show instructions TO COMPANY E fifty men to be ready for encampment way may take in a number of the boys from monroe if arrangements are satisfactory an effort will be made bi the officers of the N G U to make the best possible showing at the G A K R encampment in silt salt lake the following jetter has been received at the headquarters of company E and n dilates dicatos a lively interest in the matter capt chas lil heppler infantry N G U richfield utah sir the time tirrie has now it is nc cesan for usell us all to get right into the harness in order to put up the proper schowine at camp and the G A R parade I 1 desire N very cry much th atour company turn out fifty men and I 1 desire to do all I 1 can in berv way to help you to that end at best I 1 can do but litte but I 1 desire that you communicate just as often a you desire upon ann am subjects to me or to the commanding officer abt 1st infantry or the major commanding 3 our bata I 1 ion if aou ou are going to experience difficulty difficult in getting that number of men from your dour city I 1 see no objection to your taking men from monroe if that is agreeable to N ou and lou can secure men from ther this esdone is done in other places it is important that only steady reliable men who have sense and character and will be reasonably permanent it is i no use to enlist a man whom hom it is known will drop out after camp it is a cred credit it to any man to lelong to the g guird aird and we want nant good men I 1 suggest that aou ou hold a non commissioned officers offie ern school from now out at least until camp once each week and at this school devote the time to the study of the manuil manual I 1 sent you the other night bight the manual of arms and the school of the company and if possible make out of each non commissioned of officer fizer a soldier competent to command a company at least competent to command a squad this la ter is necessary nee essin in this school bear in mind that thai precision and snap are the objects to be desired in the execution of the manual of arms and squid squad movements the manual 0 of f arms should le be done by the members until the precision is reached and the command As iou were la is verb ver useful in arming at precision precisian for it is no use to take the second movement in a command until the first is executed with precision during this school the manner of giving commands should be thoroughly taught as laid down in the manual it should be decisive ind the inflection as aa laid down should be observed tamely given commands are tamely executed and each non commissioned officer should be practiced in giving commands care should be taken not to over work too long without a rest either in noncom non com school or at company drill frequent rests should be taken and the men permitted to sit down each corporal or man acting in that capacity should be assigned a perman nt squad to consist eon sit ot of at least four men arid and si to tight eight where possible if you hae fifty fial men ou would hive six squads with one f file ile blank in the rear rank and th thirty irta nine would give eight squads with two files blank in the rear rank of each squad after your company is assigned in squads to each corporal coro corri oral or boldick acting as such he should be required to drill arid and command his squad under the super supervision ision of bour self ind and lieutenants a portion of the time during each drill night and be held responsible lor tor their attendance and personal appearance at drill in other words he is the commanding officer of that squad and should be made to feel his responsibility for it in all things further than this the company should be divided pito nto see sections eich each duty sergeant being responsible for a section having genera gemeril I 1 supervision under the lieutenants ard being responsible for drill and attend ance if you will put this in practice right away awai and put the response res pons ability onto the noil no officers where it belongs I 1 behee you will find your work much cier cagier and secure in an added influence that will surprise you commence your bour drills and schools promptly gie the men to under understand stana that au iou dont wait art for anyone in addition to the foregoing require your nur quartermaster sergeant to keep his accounts accurately cura tely and all company compan supplies in first class condition arid and also see sec to td it that the first sergeant does his aik oik promptly he should make out all reports and answer all letters nut not of personal nature to you upon your signifying to him the character of the answer all letters of course to be over your signature sometime ago 1 think I 1 wrote all commands as to how in my judgment the monthly reports shoud be prepared to which I 1 wish you would refer that I 1 la the r rep ep rt should be lio i losca ed up of ei every ery drill dri I 1 I 1 night so go far as that drill is concerned and forwarded to this office on oil the night of the last drill of the month K kindle let me heir hegr from iou in this regard regard it your our early convenience I 1 have a letter from 11 II cloward and J S manson alanson of monroe abing aying they have hac forty men there reads to loin a com pany arid and as ing permission to organize I 1 am not ready to tike that step yet hut but if ind and croper perhaps arrangements could be made to organize two or three squads over there as a part of company E now nov this is 11 only a suggestion upon which I 1 want your candid views plainly espre expressed sed ind and I 1 want company E to have hae my fifty men in ranks if it is at all possible and I 1 bant to accomplish this result in the best way in a way that 1 i thoroughly satisfactory to ou in fact I 1 want you to accomplish it in bour our own wai waa and I 1 will back you in eer way to tho th limit of my ability if agreeable to nou ou consult with mr john hood about the mitter matter he takes great ere it interest in the company and the city of f richfield and I 1 alue his assistance and nd advice personally iery ery much very respectfully E A
