to public health I 1 for a ion time the matter has been under discus discussion bion the residents of sigurd made a vigorous vig irous kick lat last year against the continuance of the reservoir on the ground that the backing of the water from the dam clear up into sigurd made hf life a burden to the people of that town the county health authorities were cited and they said that there was nas no grounds for attributing the ill health that prevailed around sigurd to the water of the reservoir failing to get succor from that source the state board of health was appealed to and dr beatty dispatched an assistant to the site of the reservoir to investigate he unhesitatingly pronounced against the reservoir and said that with the storing of the waters in the reservoir laige quantities of decaying animal and vegetable matter were deposited and as the waters were drawn off during the irrigation season this decaying matter was exposed to the sun and foul effluvia was nas given off integ the atmosphere atmo shere contaminating earit to that extent that disease was sure to result it is a fact that sigurd has had a larze laree share share of sickness and the mot prevalent in the past has been typhoid fever which lends color to the decision dee ision of the health boards expert epert that the sickness arie ane it from the miasma from the stagnant waters left nhun ihen the reser re senoir Noir i ia lowered in the summer time there is however hoever another side to the case the people who built the reservoir say thit that the same conditions prevailed at sigurd before the reservoir was in exi ex istance sance and they point to the fact that the river at that point has eaten a channel which aich stretches almo almot t across the valley near sigurd and vermilion that the high in the toie part of the seaon oer flowed this large area and when the water receded tle the hollows hollos and places scooped out by eddies were left filled with aith water and during the summer these became staga int and were ere a worse orse menace to the health of the people thin the conditions bertain it is ib that there were nere and ponds in the old river bed years before the construct constructor on of the vermilion reservoir and these were mere the abiding places of frogs thit made night hideous with their croaking if the attorney general finds conditions to justify the contention of the people of sigurd backed by the health board lie he will institute proceedings ce to have the declared a nuisance the rhe case will be entitled the board of health of the state of utah c rel vs the rocky ford irrigation company in th compoint as now dow made out after reciting the allegations of decaying matter being deposited under the backed up waters of the reservoir and that the lo know whereof they speak say that it m i ill be but a matter of nf a few years until the town of sigurd will be moved up on to the bench and with the coming of the big scheme of the rese voir and canal state there will be a mo moie e toward the Ina tinn of nf the town on the high lands under the new canal there is IB said to be an abundance of pure water obtainable from mountain springs just west of sigurd which will avoid the difficulty of the miasma an aasma of the bottom lands landa these things thinas should be carefully looked into before an attempt is made to destroy an enterprise ter prise
