Show HIGH SCHOOL EXERCISES social function at the school house commencement exercises at tabernacle and grand ball bali closes close school year the hish high school commencement e ex excises were held the past week commemorative of the twelfth year of the schools activity the opening festivities tivi ties were in the nature of a social given by the members of the first and second year classes to the patrons of the high school this function wis held in the high school room last thursday nig night t the room was prettily decorated with the class coers white and blue and streamers of there colors were tastefully draped from the chandeliers to the tides sides of the room arrangements were completed for a game of extra extracting acting peanuts from gla glass fruit jars by means of a hat pin held in the hands bands of the extractor tables were arranged around the room twenty beur in number and the game came was progressive the winner moving to the next highest table when the bell announced the struggle ended at each table june cap trued the gent lemans prize a volume entitled ten nights in a bar room for his ability with a hot hat pin the ladies prize went to mugs mrs emma beutler a beautiful vase the consolation prizes were won by J 1 ij quist and mrs 11 L bean when this game was finished a dainty lunch was served and between courses a program was nas carried out JH J H ericksen responded to the toast the value of a high school education in which he made a splendid plea for the high school dr june told of the student life in chicago in which he related some inter citing experiences he had while a student in the wndy windy citi judge chidester made a plea for a longer course in the high school he deplored the fact that the students who competed the second year ear course now had tu to go to some other I 1 institution of learning and hi he made a stirring plea for two tivo y ojars ars additional training to he be added to the course of the richfield high school jess bean was aas assigned the subject how hove I 1 made mace my start in life and jess proved to be pretty much of a humorist he tok toik to ik occasion to say several things about the junior member of the high school faculty miss forgeon which funny but none the less biting in their sarcasm and thinly veiled envy mr bean evolved the theory when hen he did get near his subject thit it all rich men got their start through work working the otier other fellow felloe miss stella forgeon toasted the boa bo a of tie high school in a humorous vein ali mis alis s mildred forgeon bid the class and patrons farewell and in so doing she paid her compliments to mr bean for his thrusts at herself she rather had the edge on jess miss forgeon praised the members of the two classes of the school and eulogised eulogized eulogi sed mr for his hib work and thoughtful care of all connected with the school miss dot wright sang a dainty song entitled tit for tat which was charmingly rendered smith ivie fyie played a cornet solo swiss boy with variations in excellent style john hood sang a stirring song ahe old brigade all these numbers were glen given generous applause throughout the entire evening reginald brain discoursed music on the piano which m was as a great help to the delightful entertainment F K accomplished the duties of toastmaster in his usual competent manner it was pat midnight when the guests departed commencement EXERCISES the exercises at the tabernacle on friday night were mere interesting from start to finish there was some little delay in getting started as the audience was late in arriving the program was N as scheduled to begin at 7 30 00 but it was nearly an hour later before the first number wab nas announced anno announce the opening number was an overture starlight Stir light by the R H S orchestra and was rendered in fine shape the next number was an original song written by mr and sung to the music of in an old scotch song the rhe campbells are com ing this was well rendered the humming at tho the close of each verse bearing out the imitation of bagpipes edward anderson Ander sou addressed the class on an the el class ss motto beaise be wise antime in time ar except for the extreme nervousness display displaced cd mr andersons effort was a worthy one and showed consider abl thought the bone and chorus when we were a couple of kids was nicely rendered by adia LI did rean bean and the class miss mis ivy ericksen as the valedictorian an gave a good account of herself with perfect self possession and a clear enunciation she delivered the valedictory in a manner most pleasing she had her ideas well in hand and it gave the audience the utmost pleasure to listen to her her farewell to teachers and classmates was splendidly done after another c horus chorus flar flag of the fore fere principal addressed addi essed the graduates and their certificates of credit with words of comfort and cheer and an urgent plea pica for a honorable mention was given to mina alina chidester nora hansen ivy end sen dora hooper john greco and avis ais ivie for the excellence ot of the work nork done following this came one of the genie of on an program flossie cowley in her prognostication told of the fate of the members of 0 the second year class in an entertaining manner after the bridal badal rose overture by the orchestra which was a splendid piece of work by this oung joung tion the address to the graduates was given by prof E S hinckley of the B Y U it was a beautiful effort the graduates had bad occupied positions on the stand up until this time but to the strains of a march they moved tu to seats immediately in front of the stand where the speaker could face both graduates and audience A synopsis of the address would be an injustice as the address had to be heard to be appreciated he recited a legend of the effort at finding the bird of truth in a manner that was most interesting ile he told the graduates that there were things more valuable than money and urged arged them to be misers of minutes duty should be the watchword of the cass and duty would compel them to not stop with the completion of the two years of high school as it was the plain duty of each to get a college education every member was entitled to a college course and no ope one was so poor but what he or she could obtain that course prof hinckle hinckley Hinc klei possesses a wonder ful voice for public speaking and the earnestness of his manner was an inspiration to the class it I 1 is 8 safe to say that his address will vill be remembered by the class of 08 after a graduation song by the class the audience betook retook themselves to the anona where a ball was in full swing in honor of the classes this entertainment was continued until a late hour and was mas a fitting close to the exercises of the high school |
