Show south sevier 9 wasatch and ephraim win trophies at annual speech festival participants from 12 schools enter events here friday three hundred and fifty students participated at the richfield Bich field high school friday in one of the finest speech events ever held in southern utah twelve schools were represented the richfield high school being the host school did not participate for the trophies but did compete in all events trophies silver loving cups were awarded on the basis of general excellence in all events and were vere presented to the following schools south sevier high school monroe first wasatch logan academy mt pleasant second snow college lower division ephraim third the results of the individual events were as follows debate richfield high school first place south sevier high school monroe second milford high school third one act play richfield first place delta second wasatch lo gan academy third boys humorous reading perry christensen manti first floyd haumont hallmond Hall Hau monk wasatch logan academy 2nd and nathan barney south sevier monroe third girls humorous reading lorna cowley richfield first dorothy peterson hinckley second marjorie marjone monk manti third boys dramatic reading frank peacock manti first mickey nelson richfield second hartley newby monroe third girls reading mary evelyn mcmillan richfield first lillian williams north sevier second joan nell mckinney wasatch third girls oratory leah dastrup richfield first jane anderson wasatch and navis hall manti tied for second boys extemporaneous speaking lewis gross wasatch academy first voyl anderson snow college lower division and thorpe Wad denhem milford tied for second girls extemporaneous speaking ruth christensen wasatch academy first carol anderson snow college lower division second glenna mary monroe third panel discussion north san pete mt pleasant first richfield second monroe third open forum richfield first monroe and north sevier salina tied for second an interesting program was rendered during the serving of noon luncheon to participants the day was brought to a fitting climax with a matinee dance at which results were announced and trophies were awarded the success of the festival which it is expected will be continued as an annual event maybe attributed not only to students and faculty members of the schools cooperating but also to the general chairman J maiben thomson of the richfield high school faculty who was untiring in his efforts to organize the events and to his executive committee members A M maughan milton johnson and grant mason of the school faculty judges and school patrons who visited the various departments praised the educational and entertainment value of the festival persons who attended the festival last year expressed the opinion that the standard of speech work had this alear indicating the value of the festival |
