Show speech festival wins acclaim awards go to snow monroe and delta high schools so successful was the first attempt at a southern utah speech festival an event which took place here friday that immediate consideration was given making it an I 1 annual affair snow high school of ephraim was winner of first place and the 25 award given by the richfield commercial savings bank at the festival friday south sevier high school of monroe placed second to win the 15 award avard and delta won the third paize of 10 to help defray expenses of the tourney the bank also gave 5 each to to the other high schools participating salina bicknell fillmore hinckley manti and richfield snow high school of ephraim and richfield high school had the largest number of entries in the festival but all of the schools were well represented and presentations were creditable As the host school richfield did not compete for awards but the school made a favorable showing entered in the festival were eight debate teams with affirmative and ne negative 0 active divisions four one act play casts five schools in girls and one in boys dramatic reading contests seven in girls and three in boys humorous reading four in boys and one in girls extemporaneous aspea speaking ang eight in girls and boys orations at noon a luncheon was served to contestants and guests total totaling ing superintendent A J ashman welcomed the group J C whittaker hit president of the richfield commercial savings bank spoke briefly expressing the banks interest in the cultural advancement of the students of southern utah speech coaches from the various schools and representatives of various civic organizations of the community were introduced the group entertained with readings during the luncheon and later enjoyed selections by the richfield high school band directed by dallin nielson following completion of the contests a matinee dance was enjoyed at which the awards were announced by E H cashier of the richfield commercial savings bank the R H S faculty and student ca committee on arrangements voiced appreciation to the bank the Chii furniture co the telluride Tel lunde power co the richfield reaper and judges of events for their cooperation in making aluc a success of the festival |
