Show stake names anti alcoa 01 committee will join church wide campaign against use of alcohol and tobacco an anti alcohol and tobacco committee for the sevier stake was organized friday in a church wide campaign against the use of tobacco and alcohol dr T R gledhill of the stake presidency was appointed atair man committee members include mrs wilford L asbby of the stake relief society board wendell N anderson and mrs W L warner wamer of the stake af 1 I A boards and mrs george powell of the stake primary we feel that our problem is first and last a problem of education and the only way we can influence behavior is to change the thinking of people president gledhill said he explained that scientific facts and figures will be given and personal contact had with all members of the church and others interested by which it is hoped to convince as many as possible especially of the youth odthe of the folly of using alcohol and tobacco and of its injury to body and spirit continuing president gledhill said we are mindful that every mortal has faults and some bad habits and that these habits are exter emely difficult to overcome we further realize that there are many faults and habits worse than those mentioned but the church is alarmed at the great increase in consumption of alcohol andio and tobacco and feels it would be recreant to its duty and opportunity if it did not lend its influence to counteract this unwholesome traffic consumption of alcohol in 1936 reached two billion gallons consumption of beer was gallons per capita with the total retail cost reaching five billion dollars consumption of cigarettes increased from 92 billion in 1926 to billion in 1936 much of this increase being due to use of cigarettes by women and girls |
