Show I 1 flexible program programs Is ls school aim curriculum discussed at institute friday teachers association reorganized visiting speakers at the sevier district teachers institute held friday a the richfield high school were charles H skidmore state f superintendent u of public instruction miss nellie hendricks supervisor of elementary schools of the weber district and dan baker a former teacher of the richfield high school and now principal of the jefferson school in salt lake superintendent A J ashman presided at the institute assemblies and conducted departmental sessions for high school and junior high school teachers while mrs ellse elise stillman primary supervisor er directed departmental sessions for the elementary teachers organizing and presenting work on the unit plan was discussed by miss hendricks in departmental sessions mrs stillman emphasized the importance of making the program of studies flexible rather than adhering to strict time limits for each subject she conducted a special session for first and second grade teachers mr skidmore discussed the states vocational program superintendent erin ashman spoke of changes in the course of study stating that the schools should not be at cross purposes with the economic conditions under which the students and parents live and make their living he said the curriculum should be adapted to the needs of the community attention was given to the increased emphasis on physical and mental health studies and practices in the schools health studies will be increased in every grade from the first to the twelfth with 15 minutes a day in the elementary schools for study and 20 minutes for directed physical education and play additional requirements quire ments of the state course of study for social science studies were also discussed mr baker presented the subject of the I 1 junior ijunior red cross as it relates to schools the introduction of 30 new teachers in the district by 30 other r teachers was a pleasing social feature of the luncheon at noon A girls chorus directed by owen bingham furnished music for the opening assembly immediately after the institute the sevier district teachers association reorganized by electing paul packard of the richfield high school president E M wade of the south sevier high school vice president and max marquardson qu ardson of the richfield high school secretary treasurer A representative from each section of the district was elected A motion passed that the teachers join the utah education association one hundred per cent |
