Show WOMEN I 1 N 0 1 X I 1 E R H S teachers and companions have narrow escape breaking through two feet of new mew snow 0 on n the lonely cedar Long valley highway miss marian peterson and miss morcko aured allred R H S teachers and their earn cam pan ions mrs dorothy brown and mrs airs ura herrington representatives of the compton company of kansas hansas city also broke into headlines lines s in the state papers tuesday and d placed themselves in the spot bight of public attention many teachers have taught snowbound but to be snowbound well different the group left richfield sunday morning for a trip gnp to bryce canyon and when they failed to return in the evening the few friends who learned of their destination beca became in e alarmed and telephone lines began to hum between the guy lewis home the bryant young home and the johnston hotel sheriff V al fairbanks was contacted and a phone call put in to rubys rabys inn near bryco bryce canyon disclosed that the girls had been last seen there at 1130 sunday morning in the meantime the pleasure seekers ne ekers had left bryce canyon and started over the mountains to cedar city having inquired at a service station and been informed that the road w was as all right the operator evidently having misunderstood der stood to which road they referred fe when the group reached 1 navajo lake the snow became so deep further progress was impossible so the ladies spent the night in their car the car had a good heater which was all right until the gas was exhausted the girls had attempted to get some aati action or out of the car by applying chains and filling in a robe for the car vv wheels heels but like the proverbial mule it would neither go forward mor backward in the heavy snow monday morning they set out on oil foot to retrace their way to the muck duck creek ranger station which they had passed sunday three miles from the point their car stalled making the best of a bad situ situation aaion the girls tied around their heads and tore pieces of a robe to wrap around their legs begs the picture was too good so they paused to take a shot hiie with a camera plowing through three miles of enow two feet deep was not a soft job but the girls finally arrived at the ranger station broke into it and happily found that the telephone responded to their call and with word sent to cedar city 35 miles distant help was forthcoming the ranger station was provided with fuel and with a warm lire fire the group patiently awaited their rescuers forest supervisor james E gurr indicated that it would be a five ave hour job with a snow plow from highway 89 to the station P but monday night road crows crews succeeded in reaching the station and took horses along to pull the stranded car to safety at the nearest service station a hot meal awaited the girls and with their car in order they started back to JUch field arriving here at eight tuesday morning mor ming the elevation at duck creek is feet and it is not unusual for thirty inches of snow to fall there in one storm mr gurr said the girls came through none the worse for the experience but mrs airs brown who has spent the past lew few years in florida feels like a well ell initiated beber of winter sports followers |
