Show RICHFIELD WINS morl VICTORY oell error on interpretation pre tation of rules defeats team baseball players have a habit of criticising criticizing critic ising and objecting to decisions by umpires sometimes because they disagree with his judgment and sometimes for other reasons but when even the team receiving the benefit of a break acknowledges the incorrectness of a ruling there must be grounds for a kick such was the case sunday when the richfield team took the short end of a 7 to 6 count at beaver against the champions of the southwestern utah league solely because of a misinterpretation of a rule by the official the local boys went into the first half of the ninth inning one run behind 3 to 4 but wayne peterson batted for rex ivie and drew a base on balls he held first while val morrison was out and went to third on a pinch single by ray carr who hit for harry green and a moment later scored the tying run before the inning was over two more runs had crossed the plate and it looked like a game in the bag for richfield but then with two beaver men out in their final time at bat and a runner on second a heartbreaking heart breaking decision changed the complexion of the final outcome the runner tried to steal third base and a perfect peg to ray carr by catcher garth gray had him beat by at least two feet but the umpire ruled that as carr had tagged him with the back of his glove and not with the ball itself although the ball was in his glove hand the runner was safe this out would have ended the game but with this as encouragement to the Beave rites and discouragement coura gement to the richfield players the game was soon over in kor favor of beaver 7 to 6 the local boys had to find consolation in the fact that after the game the other umpire and the beaver players admitted the error of the decision 1 in winning a moral victory rich fields team played very good ball and made few mistakes they found boswell the beaver chucker hard to hit but in the sixth inning witla witha relief hurler in the box two runs tied the score boswell returned to the box in the ninth to stop the locals rally and received credit for the victory john winkel pitched good ball and made two sparkling plays flays at first base on balls hie hit in that direction the hitting was not quite up to par but considering that the boys were swinging against an old experienced head little more could have been expected after the beaver game the players decided to play one or two more games if opponents could be found they have one game scheduled for mantl on september 16 but feel they are now playing first class ball and would like to show the local fans what they can do before closing the season |
