association at a meeting hold at the richfield armory tuesday night dr 0 acted as chairman while president R P howard served as secretary in the absence of A D anderson there was considerable discussion of the two topics mentioned above but the sentiment expressed was all in favor of the motions which were passed without a dissenting vote the f following ol lowing points were brought out favoring the closing of fish lake earlier than the usual time which is 15 october 20 all the female brook and mackinaw trout now being caught there are filled with spawn and it Is said that an average size fish taken now will cause the loss of 2000 eggs mackinaw are not being planted in this lake due largely to the difficulty of rearing the young fish and the supply depends upon their own reproduction while trout are in the period preparatory for spawning ming just as all other animal life they are voracious feeders and will take bait of almost any kind with the result that the lake is depleted more rapidly of its stock during the 20 days of october than during any other period of the season william sorensen deputy fish and game warden stated that the brook trout start spawning about november 1 and mackinaw begin a few days earlier usually about october 20 he also said that the fish during the preparatory period are not really palatable as food the lake was closed last year on october 8 and mr sorensen expressed his opinion that fishing this year has been consistently better than it has been for years previous moreover more brook spawn was taken last year by more than a million than was taken in any one of the three preceding years he stated and more rainbow spawn was taken last spring than during any other year in the history of the lake A copy of this resolution favoring the closing of the lake on october 1 will be sent to newell B cook state fish and game commissioner who has the power to close any waters to fishing earlier if he deems such action an emergency it is understood that there is considerable opposition to this early clos closing I 1 ng by some fis fishermen he rm en in the north part of the state and by one of the resort owners at fish lake charles d however has emphatically declared that he wants the lake closed in order to assure good fishing in future years and prevent this lake suffering the fate of strawberry and panguitch lakes which have been ruined already I 1 it t is said that for ten years panguitch lake was no good for fishing at all and it is just now beginning to come continued on page 8 I 1 abolishing guides and closing fish lake early ached continued from page 1 back tho the richfield city council at its meeting thursday evening passed a resolution recommending to the state fish and game department that the season at fish lake bo be closed on or immediately after october 1 of this year in order to preserve the spawning fish and to prevent a depletion in the stock of fish now existent in the lake it is understood that various other organizations in this community plan to take similar action and send notice to this effect to the state ish fish f and game commissioner in time to have the lake closed legally within the set time A number of speakers at this m meeting tuesday denounced the law lav which permits guides at fish lake and the association went on re record cord as vigorously opposed to this system it was stated that these guides are nothing less than fish vendors one being reported as having bragged that he took 6 pounds of fish for his customers cus tomera in one season mr sorensen stated that if the practice of these guides of taking out 10 to 20 tons of fish each year could be stopped there would be good fishing f lor everybody for years to come ahe 1 I he suggestion was made that if the so called sportsmen want to buy fish they should go to those lish eries cries where they are raised for the market the following committee was appointed by chairman to contact either by letter or in person all the nominees for state senator and representative and ask them to declare themselves on this question of abolishing the guides at fish lake joseph L asbury chairman oluf G nielson of salina and H F greenleaf of aurora the reaction of these nominees will be given publicity in the salt lake tribune and richfield reaper the matter of the bag limit and length of the pheasant shooting season was held over until uc the next meeting owing to the fact that william sorensen soran sen stated that it is impossible yet to determine the approximate number of
