THKSK residents of Rockview Estates told the City Council ' ast Tuesday night that motorists speed through their subdivision and that they are getting storm drain runoff in their yards After a lengthy discussion, the council agreed to table for two ' weeks any decision that would help the residents until the city -1 statT and Police Chiet Cliff Russell had an opportunity to study V the problems and report to the council their recommendations. V THE COUNCIL made three motions before getting a second to I, the motion for the study. 1 lowever, council members did express ' concern for the problems and made some suggestions -- especially especial-ly concerning the speeding problem. ; It was recommended that 3-way stop signs be placed at 60 : North 500 Kast and to replace a yield sign at 540 North 5(H) East. It was also suggested that dips or bumps be placed on 500 E. to slow traffic. BUT THE council also agreed that bumps and dips arc not always the best means of slow ing traffic. "Some motorists, espe- daily teenagers and motorcyclists, like the dips and bumps because be-cause the faster they go. the more fun it is." The council vote to postpone the decision was 4-0 with Councilman Coun-cilman Michael Kjar casting the dissenting vote. He said there had been enough discussion on the matter and wanted to see action. RESIDENTS OF the area said that engineering of the street --steep --steep downhill w ith a gradual curve -- enticed motorists to speed. They said some of the speeding motorists w ere residents of the neighborhood, but most of the problem w as w ith teenagers who are visiting the area. Local residents earlier signed a petition regarding the problem and even offered to help pay the cost of speed-control devices --whether --whether it be dips, bumps or stop signs. "WE WANT something done now before someone, especially a child, is killed by a speeding motorist," said one resident. J Others said they had w itnesscd cyclists and motorists traveling in excess of 50 miles per hour in the subdivision. City officials said they would also study the storm drain problem prob-lem for suitable recommendations. ALSO, RESIDENTS attended the council meeting expressing concern that a countyjail or regional prison is being considered in -, Centerville. Mayor Neil Blackburn said he and the council are ',' sympathetic with local residents and will stay abreast of any proposals made by Davis County or through the State Corrections Correc-tions Department.
