Show WAYNE COUNTY MAN WRITES OF NEW WONDERS for the richfield reaper by E P our silent sentinels the cliffs near torrey utah have again yield yielded el of their treasures over which they have so faithfully stood guard for at least fifteen hundred years this time mr earl F behunin of torrey has the credit of unearthing eight of the most perfect baskets with as many of the most exquisite designs of pattern perhaps haps ever produced produce and varying in size from ten quarts to one quart also a pair of buckskin sandals and an enormous bow string wrapped around a bunch of sinew no doubt intended for another string or to repair this one of one end is broken off the same day october 3 mr behunin in company with glenn nelson also of torrey unearthed in the same spot a large three gallon stone jug and the following lay day three more of somewhat smaller size were added by them to this magnificent ant 11 list t the above items were found about three quarters of a mile from the place where the writer unearthed the three war shields which were made from the buffalo skins skin other items of interest 4 are being added daily to the already wonderful collection which lias has grown to all of which are splendid and interesting specimens all of these are on display at the home of bishop E P of torrey and may be been een at any time davne wa ne is indeed a wonderland Non derland of scenery and the writer is very much of the opinion that it is an excellent field for archaeological exploration yet in its infancy signs as we read them are very ery promising for instance word nord was brought to me occasionally of some onie old giaves or burial places near torrey about six siv weeks ago in company with my wife 1 I visited these spots and instead of them being mere graves as had been suggested we nie discovered them to be the remains of fortresses behind which the ancient inhabitants fought their intruding foes these forts are about one mile apart and are built on prominent points of vantage the my reads of broken arrow points in and around these forts and the valley between with hundreds eds of graves tell their own onn gruesome story of how t two ano mighty opposing forces once fought foi possession no doubt of this land and how perhaps for wee weeks the battle raged we picture women and eb children ildren under cover of darkness dar kriess carrying food and water to the entrenched braves and another force of skilled workmen at the ammunition factory diaco feied by dr A A kerr and myself about two weeks ago about three miles mile west of the battle ground with another force foice of runners hurrying the manufactured arrows rows to the battle front U t last the entrenched army seeing defeat at hand demolishes everything of value to the foe and under cover of darkness retreats le treats to the southwest carrying with them whatever Nhat ever belongings remained and bidding good ave as they pa passed qed to their homes nestled among the cliffs cliff dawn finds the enemy in hot pursuit overburdened the retreating eating warners war ar nors women and children seeing themselves overtaken talen burry their burdens in the most secluded spots and hurry on om somewhere to the southwest gout hiest they are overtaken completely deti oved never neer ne er again to return to their little homes home high up ul in the cliffs cliff q and it ni which aich v we e gaze in awe anne and admiration |
