Show A flying tri trip p europe 13 by mrs W D buchanan our little party consisted of four my mother two aunts and myself we sailed from brooklen new nev york on n one of those mighty floating palaces amid the cheers and fa farewells reNNell afes of our fellow p passengers fengers and their friends on shore it is 15 alm al a a thrilling event the voyage over was mas lovely in every eer respect some days I 1 quite forgot that I 1 ava on a ship hip at sea as it was so smooth on board was so congenial and we me had tuch such fun playing game dancing singing and making merry 1 I for one did not miss mils a single meal on account of seasickness we landed at bremen germany and after successfully pasting passing the custom officers vi e proceeded b train from the harbor to bremen proper As this was my mv f firt gli glimpse pe of the european trains I 1 found them very interesting each tram train is ill aided up into numerous nurney ou compartments comp each with a door opening at the side of the train each combar compartment ament holds about eight passengers and u usually ualle they are found to be ery cry congenial the locomotives seen seem very cry small compared to ours and go much slower bremen is a very cry old quaint city I 1 with anth narrow crooked streets and quaint old buildings building underneath a large beautiful old church we me visited the blei keller this cellar is the resting place for bodies 50 0 vears nears old which have been preserved by this blei ble on account of its radio activity nd now have hane all the appearances of being leather the bodies were mere originally placed there as a burial bunal ground and nd hundreds of years afterwards the inhabitants discoN discovered ered that they had been preserved berlin is a beautiful clean city the alers there are not spanned with ugly iron bridges as they are in our large cities but with mith very artistic structures and beautiful sculpture work trees flow honors ers and beautiful statues datues are to be found all over oer bertin berlin here we me visited one of the two hundred gorgeous palaces formerly owned by the ex kalser kaiser in ve the shops of berin we A e hobgen observed ed that clothing was lot the same came as here also food but salaries pyo in in germany are ridiculously low so that ve me could scarcely understand how the people can make both ends end meet it is cuite impo impossible sible for the average man to save ane any money under these circumstances and since they lost all of their savings during the revolutionary days dans and when nhen the money monel lost all of its value alue it is quite a deplorable state to see old men and women accustomed to the comforts of life now begging for bread however order reigns throughout the city and all are looking hopefully towards the ne new goern government ment for relief in spite of these conditions existing 1 I was informed by our mormon mi mis tio sio that the german mission leads all other european missions in its ts financial support to the church J there arv are more conN converts erts being made in in the german mission than in any other in the world their total last 5 ear being 2000 while altogether there here were cologne on the rhine was our next stop here we me visited one of the most famous cathedrals in the world there were many english and french soldiers in this city we next took the trip up the rhine by boat from coblenz to mainz which trip I 1 is world famous for scenic beauty the hills on both shores bores are covered with terraced vineyards vineyard with avith quaint villages along the shores here and ruins of gorgeous old castles crowning the hills As the ms along aery turn is a new delight I 1 left my mv obice tra elling companions in vou southern thern german anil and toured switzerland and italy alone space here not allow allou a description which chich would do justice to the glories of switzerland suffice it then to pay fay I 1 think it is the jewel jenel of the earth in the beautiful old cita of zurich I 1 was happy happ to obtain some ery cry valuable genealogy from lucerne I 1 crossed one of those beautiful swiss lakes by boat to a little town nestled at the foot of mount blount I 1 ascended this mountain by means of a funicular railroad gol going I 1 ng practically all straight up for over oer one hour words cannot describe the beauties of nature there below lay the blue blue lakes with the lofty alps towering above aboe them their pinnacles hidden in the clouds I 1 slept over oer night at the summit of this lofty mountain both the sunset and the sunrise were marclous marv clous we were far above the clouds surrounded by mountain peaks peak and not a sound to be heard beard but the tinkling of the bells on the cattle in the valleys alleys below winding around and through many mountains including st gotthardt gottharda Gott hards pass ind anil en enjoying joing the most marvelous mountain scenery in the world I 1 finally reached the italian border macre I 1 passed the customs officers in milan I 1 had ni first experience truing to become accustomed to italian money and I 1 soon learned that the italians italian mill ill take eier eer cent they can get from an american tourist I 1 in tested ested in a small dictionary diction ao as I 1 did not understand a vord mord of either cither italian or french the trip from milan mian to florence ri orence was mas rather unpleasant because m nc c ha had to go through forb tunnels and I 1 vas mas just black upon mn arrival in florence although my italian traveling companioni comp imons mere arc cia er friendly and tried to be congenial in a few of broken english I 1 loe ione the little city of florence where the inhabitants seem to lle lie contentedly in conditions existing ci sting hundreds 0 of f icara cars ago sanitation is quite unknown there the palaces there are marvelous mir it would be useless for me to tr to to describe the art galleries I 1 in n florence as the world knows what the contain one could spent pent vears ears there and not be mearl wear of their charm rome I 1 is a large bus quite modem em cit beautiful bridge fountain statuary and buildings building the ruins of ancient rome were highly interesting to me as well mell as the way where dullere the early christians used to walk and the catacombs Cata combs where they fled from perc persecution cution and buried bened their dead the catacomb catacombs cata combs are entirely underground being a series of caves cae with small passage ways mays connecting them there are hundreds of these outside of the walls of rome As the earia earl christians fled to them for concealment man were mere captured and martyred marty red right in the catacombs cata combs some of these caes cae are arc fine file stones deep underground each person was mas given ghen a candle to light hi his ft nay ay and cautioned to stav sta close to the guide who was a catholic mon monk there are still t I 1 11 some bones bone s there of the ch chris s t tian jacq s I 1 visited st peters church several times and the vatican which is where the pope resides it is in surely gorgeous this is holy year a jubilee vear bear celebrated only every enery twenty fine file icara ears and thousands of pilgrims were mere gathered in rome from all over the world the processions professions process ions and ceremonies were mere ver ery interesting to me I 1 in n the center of st peters church under a gigantic golden altar is a tomb where the remains of peter the te apostle are supposed to in lay at rest an anly the pope officiates at this altar eighty nine lamps are k kept ept burning constantly wound this tomb in the famous old seaport tow town n of genoa I 1 visited the home of columbus the old part of the city is suie ly quaint with aith its narrow winding streets and high old buildings hang ing over them I 1 visited the most beautiful cemetery in the world which is in genoa it is worthwhile to make a trip to genoa if only to see the ma marvelous nelous sculpture work in this cemetery from genoa I 1 went back through switzerland to the most beautiful little littie town of interlaken Inter laken from which the famous mountain Jung frau is ascended interlaken Inter laken is situated between two lovely imely lakes which are perfectly charming this is a very cry popular american tourist resort I 1 spent several davs with my mother and aunts aunt and then left them to go on through france to paris pans to describe paris pans would mould be a task in itself paris pans is paris all it is a very nery beautiful cit very cry interesting and gay I 1 suppose it is the most wicked city in the world I 1 flew by aeroplane from pans to london which was as a thrilling experience forme for me they have hae splendid passenger service service over oer there and vou jou are just as safe there as anywhere else there are two flights flight each day dan morning and afternoon each plane holds twelve passengers besides beides the pilot and mechanic the ride nde is very smooth and pleasant but the motors make a great deal of noise the planes fly on an average of feet aboe sea leel and this trip usually takes about ai 21 hours I 1 passed the time pleasantly by bv writing a letter to my husband and also had a radio set oer which I 1 heard a concert from either paris pans or london I 1 found london ery cry interesting and had the pleasure of going sightseeing ight seeing there with ith some released missionaries 1 it was mas a real treat to be in a country where I 1 could speak Engli english sli and be understood now I 1 am in dear old U S again anil and dont ask me if I 1 am glad mrs dwight buchanan returned recently from a trip through a large
