Show WEATHER GODS NOT FAVOR OUR COUNTY FAIR with exception of gate receipts fair was very successful sf ul excellent exhibits good amusements and splendid races which would have been a wonderful attraction to our county fair did not bring the masses that would have come had the weather conditions been more favorable that the weather alone was responsible for a deficiency in gate g ate receipts was amply proven fri day when weather conditions did not interfere with the attendance and the record of gate receipts of all fairs held heretofore was broken governor fair the main attraction of friday of course was the visit of governor dern the honored guest was taken to the grounds by mayor F G ala martines rhe and was conducted to t judges stand from which place he addressed the assembled crowds over the public address system of pearl after expressing his satisfaction at having been able to come and to see so large a crowd of people of the county he spoke briefly on the movement initiated by the federal government overn ment to turn over public domain lands to the states the governor is of the opinion that a transfer of ownership would be of advantage to the states only if not te th surface rights alone but also Mer underground ground and mineral rights would be made state property after the address the governor witnessed some of the races and rodeo exhibits and then inspected the exhibits and mingled with the crowds exhibits better than ever the exhibits at the county fair gave a good and compre comprehensive bensi v e view view of the resources of our cou county nty As far as agriculture is concerned the articles contributed for the show were perhaps not as many as in in pother years but were splendid in quality all other departments exhibited a large variety of high class goods and especially is this true in regard to the home economics department part ment the domestic art department the flower show and the exhibits of minerals found in our coup county among the curios was a walk ing cane carved from scrub oak by jack thornton and intended to be made a present to harry lauder better babies best crop was exceedingly well represented at the fair and the better babies department can justly lie be aroud of the unusually fine babies that were brought to the fair by delighted mothers to take part in the better babies contest the judges had a hard time in selecting the best of the best and the final results were ere as follows boys one year and under two first melvin E son of mr and mrs H roland of monroe second howard son of mr and mrs roy shields of salina third jack keith son of mr and mrs parley toulson Ppul son of richfield girls one year and under two first pamela daughter of dr and mrs L A poulson of richfield second beverley daughter of attorney and mrs J vernon erickson of richfield third shirley Shir lcy daughter of mr and mrs wendell larsen of richfield boys two years and under three first ralph son of mr and mrs horace horne home of salina second mack black son of mr and mrs vern pace of richfield girls two years and under three first fonda ann daughter of mr and mrs H C williams of salina second verleen daughter of mr and mrs joseph AT peterson of richfield third leah jane daughter of mr and mrs R 1 I jorgensen boys three years and under four first gordon lewis son of mr and mrs J L of richfield girls three years and under four tied for first mary patricia daughter of attorney and mrs henry E beal of richfield and shirley glea daughter of mr and mrs L A cowley of venice second joyce daughter of dr and mrs A I 1 rs D B gottfredson of richfield third varol june daughter of mr air and mrs dewey dewcy sampson of richfield best pair of twins first ruth and richard children of mr anti and mrs J B anderton of elsinore second douglas and donald children of mr and mrs richard hansen of richfield boys and girls clubs the sewing exhibits of the girls 4 H clubs excelled in size the exhibits of previous years and displayed some splendid needle needlework and design winners of the contests of the girls clubs are listed elsewhere the junior farm bureau exhibited not only agricultural products product 3 of splendid quality but also made a fine showing in the livestock department and called forth attention in the stock judging contest which was won by the ag team from the monroe high school |
