Show school news EDITED BY COVE SCHOOL idona sargent editor FROM 11 THE OFFICE OF THE superintendent second language test now being given the junior high pupils of the district are now receiving the second language test of the year and the first grammar test the first test given was correct usage in this the seventh and eighth grade pupils made an excellent showing in grammar ni ar the results are not so encouraging the high schools also have had their second english test the results will bre be announced in the next issue harmonica band successful the made by the harmonica bands of the district is very gratifying those schools that have kept up the practice are now able to produce music for the public entertainments it is hoped that more schools school will tike take up this work next year preparations for sevier day soon to begin the next meeting of the school principals will be devoted largely to ai a ranging wrangling the program for sevier day according to suggestions already made sevier day this year will be bigger and better than ever superintendent ashman will announce the he subject for the debates this year immediately after this next meeting COVE SCHOOL debate of much interest the fifth and sixth grades selected two tea teams ins for a debate the question was resolved that thomas jefferson did more good for his I 1 country than benjamin franklin the debate was interesting and eN exciting citing biorn beginning to end the affirmative debaters b cing being better prepared and scoring one the most points were awarded the victory baseball started the boys of our school just wait for all the snow to melt before they began playing baseball second and third bases were all covered with snow but that matter the boys went right on playing the ground is now dry and the spring sport is welcomed stray pen wheres my pencil or pen wheres Wh cres my ruler such expressions could be heard for a few days by many of the students the answer was w as simply why of course co urse its in the stray pen yes and it costs a penny to get it out we hope this will teach a few of the careless students to take better care of their property RICHFIELD SCHOOL students bitten by DOR dog miss frances beat beal of the fifth grade was severely bitten by a dog she is unable to attend school until the wound is healed garn sly was also bitten but he is able to attend school distinguished visitor at school miss hechler of the palmer writing co visited the grade school last week she taught many rooms the way to write the palmer method sympathy and respect shown by in sympathy with our classmates winter sports continued A cold wind with the temperature of ten degrees below zero was the cause of frozen toes ears etc of man many of the junior high students last week in spite of the cold the students did not stop throwing snowballs sleigh riding skating etc basketball game an exciting game of basketball was played at monroe last friday at the end of tile the first game the score was 14 to 2 in monroes monroen Mon roes favor the second cond game came out better for the junior high with a score of 14 to 4 in Rich fields favor the junior high has made an effort to win all games played this year and they have succeeded quite well JOSEPH SCHOOL weekly program each week the newly elected officers plan a program to be held each friday afternoon but we have now decided our programs will be more interesting if the fifth and sixth grades join us in carrying them out one friday we are supposed to compose the program and the fifth and sixth grades take their turn the following friday we surely hope this plan will prove a success A and B class in the first grade they have two classes the A class is where the best students read the B class is the poorer students reading class we hope that before long we only have an A class student returns elaine black has returned to school heie to resume her studies elaine is in the third grade and has gone to school here before efficient president our new president vernal lott is doing sonic some wonderful now we have worth north while programs pio plo grams and our school is better for him being in it we hope we can keep him in office all year SALINA SCHOOL efficiency aard offered many contests have been staged but still the one sponsored by the P B P W club is creating the most interest an award of ten dollars is to be given to the gill in tile the junior high who attains tb highest efficiency in all studies many will vill strive to attain this recognition achievements evident the progress progress of our school is becoming very evident with new tests a new eagerness is shown some of our pupils are destined to the hall of fame faille if they do not gain farne fame as orators they will gain it as scholars artists or some other way if we continue at this rate ev every ery pupil will be far past standard elsinore loses game to salina the basketball game between our school and elsinore was the liveliest game that could be played one can truly say that the teams were evenly fast and efficient one team would be ahead by a few points but before long the other team would be in advance probably the fact that our team won can be traced to the splendid support our team was given by the rooters when there were only fifteen seconds left to play we were tied elsinore made a foul pitch but nevertheless our fast team made a field basket and a foul pitch making the score 13 to 11 in favor of salina the boys that play on our main team are lee bird grant davidson morris curtis R hugh h nielson clell sorensen and glen starker uT parker arker the second team played an excellent game and by the speedy passes and accurate basket shooting the score was 11 to 8 in favor of salina the rd VENICE SCHOOL art work the students of the venice sl sixth th gr aigle grade fa art class have selected a design for a health poster they ar are e 1 drawing pictures of tooth blushes tooth paste combs and vegetables to put on their chart we hope that they will be successful and that their efforts effort will be rewarded with i a very good poster student returns return to school A fourth grade student has been absent from school for two weeks on account of having chicken pox slie site has recovered and is back to school again we hope that she can soon catch up with the other pupils in her grade results of punctuality contest first second and third grades first fourth and fifth grades second sixth seventh and eighth grades third this is the report our teachers gave us wednesday of the punctuality contest we have chosen a committee of three to arrange a program for us to entertain the winners the losers still have hopes of Nv winning inning when the contest starts again next week try tn harder is our from now on GLENWOOD SCHOOL weight on january 24 our weight and height 1 were nere taken there is a slight increase in weight but we will all have to eat more and drink lots of milk if we all get a blue balloon which means that we are normal non nal in height and weight taking pictures friday afternoon after recess a photographer from colorado came to school and took pictures of each student we hope the pictures will be good when they come back so we ve can have a picture of all our school friends and our teacher A visit from the supervisors last week the supervisors came to visit us we were glad to see them mr ashman gave language and spelling tests to the fifth sixth seventh and eighth grades we did not come up to the score but we hope to soon be able to get standard reading tests were given to the third and fourth grades by mrs stillman ELSINORE SCHOOL A close run A basketball game was played monday january 28 at salina between elsinore and salina junior high schools the elsinore players played a splendid game but when the game ended the score was 12 to 11 in favor of salina enthusiasm still high for future games we are all looking forward expectantly to the basketball garne game to be played friday between elsinore and monroe the game will be at the elsinore gymnasium we hope that we will be victorious birthday of burns observed on robert burns birthday january 25 the elsinore sixth g grade rade had a small program his life was reviewed by some of the students and others recited some of his poe poems rits evelyn sylvester chorded on her hei banjo uk uke and sang comin thru the rye the program was enjoyed by all what we can do to keep memories of past heroes alive one place where the memories oi of past heroes should be kept alive i in our schools students of the higher grades ought to prepare programs to have on the birthdays of heroes of the world they should also read about the lives of these past heroes the smaller boys and girls could be told the lives ok of these men and learn leam to know of the noble nature and wonderful characters ol oi men of the past SIGURD SCHOOL marimba band the fifth and sixth grades of 0 our ur school have organized a marimba band they have just begun to learn to play them the marimbas ma are made of hardwood they are played with small wooden hammers which the pupils themselves have made paper log cabins the third and fourth grades have made lo 10 log cabins fiam paper the logs are drawn with a pencil and colored with crayons when the four sides and the roof are fitted together it makes a very clever cabin history puzzles last week the fifth grade made puzzles the pupils wrote as if they were one of the e following folio robert fulton samuel B INI morse orse happy cappy to have him with them again radio program the fifth and sixth grades gave a radio program friday afternoon each member member of the class took part giving either a song reading or selling cloth lace and thread A woman came from miles away to trade with him one busy day when she had gone from out the store he found he owed her six cents more he traveled for miles that dreary night to pay her back and make it right geography work the fourth grade has taken great interest in their geography work they have made booklets and charts and have collected material for exhibits they have received much help from the geographic magazine from back numbers as well as from those of this year vear left school mead camp a student of the sixth grade has discontinued school here and is going to school at central harmonica class the teacher of our harmonica class has not been feeling well lately we daxe ae not been having our class regularly but we have been practicing hoping to kept from school on account of scarlet fever we hope they will soon be able to attend school again authors studied the eighth grade is studying the lives of authors we are now studying the life of james russell lowell lowee we find this very interesting uncle tonis toms cabin the slavery question is now being studied in the eighth grade history class we are reading uncle toms cabin which waa wa written luring during the period of the slavery trouble by harriet beecher stowe stove it is very in te tei esting lesting and adds much inter est st to our history his doiy class when the book is finished we ve are going to make a book on it for english class fourth graders study cotton the students of the fourth grade are t taking akin g the interesting study of cotton aiom the time it is grown in tile the fields until it is made into cloth in order to make the study more interesting te their teacher is having some of them make little rag negro people others make inake the cotton bushes and one student has made the cotton gin they are all very much interested in this study and at the same time it is very instructive to them MONROE SCHOOL monroe juniors success the monroe juniors always make a success when they try anything their big success this week was the putting over a splendid program it only a program consisting of students from section one but students d ent S from all a 11 three sections took part it surprising to hear anyone say that a fine program of the junior high because the monroe juniors always have fine programs and everything else they put on the program held january 25 was as follows reading madge bates poem lucile sorensen song carol hunt shirley shit ley morrison alloi rison bertha lee and lynn smith delean anderson read some jokes that made the students laugh heartily eleanor jensen played a piano solo and mr air newton gave a talk the rest of the time was turned over to the yell masters sewing club adopts laws recently the sewing club made laws pertaining to that club the laws they have adopted are as fol lows I 1 officers must be elected every si six weeks 2 there shall be a punishment provided for continuous disturbers make otherwise 4 A finance committee will be appointed every time they want a 0 social O affair and the amount of money can be set by the class 5 to remain a member of the club one must make as many points as tho the teacher aligns her 6 there shall be a method of impeaching pe officers by a two thirds vote of the members present 7 not more than one social affair per officers term is allowed 8 one member cannot hold more than one position at a time they hope these laws will be carried out successfully by the students of the sewing club agriculture club hurrah for the agriculture club the club is drilling fast and it will soon boom they have elected a president vice president secretary and a research committee in their next meeting they will get a good name for it after it is completed they are going to take up agriculture projects to help the town homes and school civics club active since the new officers of the civics club have been elected the club has been more active many suggestions have been made and worked on mr newton the supervisor is well pleased and they hope he will continue to be so civics project monday january 28 the girls of section iwo two of the monroe junior high accomplished a civics civics project that has long been thought of this project was the cleaning of the girls toilet all of the girls joined in they |
