Show HOW TO ATTRACT CAPITAL AND INDUSTRY sevier county has a wealth of resource sour cec we have written about them so frequently that it would be pouring water into a well to say more about it readers of our paper will find many references to those resources in the eckla weekly eck lv items of news agriculture in all its branches including dairying and poultry industries has the best of possibilities in in our county metals mid and other miner minerals ils abound in the formations of the county and en attempts are being made now to locate and develop them with all these resources re the population of the county is growing only in small percentages and the assessed valuation is almost stationery like every community with some ambition sevier county is anxious anious to grow anti and one of the best ways for growth is the attraction of new industries new industries bring new people new life and more prosperity why cannot we attract them to sevier county counte W M mckendrick manager of the research department of the utah taxpayers association was in sevier county about two weeks ago and in his talks in the several communities of the county dwelt on the chief cause of oui failure to attract industries high taxation high taxes are a serious handicap to industries and they are about as effective as anything could be in keeping new industries out of a community As the center of population changes industries are constantly shifting many are going from the seaboard to the interior of the country but they will not go into cities and towns which are burdened with excessive tax rates there are too many live communities where such a condition does exist the city or town which wants to grow will start in by running its government efficiently and keeping its tax rate to the minimum consistent with progressive government mr mckendrick succeeded in or gin izing taxpayers associations in all the larger communities of the ciuni ty and in combining the several local organizations into a county organization which promises to do efficient work we know very well that with the present system of taxation in in our state it is almost impossible to reduce in sevier county it might le be possible to save a few hundred dollars here and a few hundred dollars there by a careful arrangement of the budgets but in the aggregate this would not amount to many thousand dollars and would be expressed in the levy in only very small fractions of a mill the main thing will be to reach more taxable property to reach the soca so called ca lied intangible income which at the present time escapes taxation entirely we understand that the taxpayers association will work diligently and cooperate with farm organizations to change our system of taxation tax every legislator ought to oe pledged to assist in introducing a tax system which will relieve farmers an and real estate holders hol deis the only holders of tangible property at the present time to increase revenues not by high t taxation but ay iy y taxing what now is intangible in this way reducing the taxes bringing industries into the state slate and the states component parts the counties and cities and milking making of utah what she ought to be one of the most important and richest industrial du centers of the united state |
