Show THE CANDIDACY OF SENATOR CURTIS sen senator ator curtis curti s of kansas tod today ay oc the unique position of being the only formal and announced candidate for the republican presidential nomination the president himself has declared that he did not choose to he a candidate governor lowden hm has s in no way amplified his original statement that no man ever ran away from the presidency and even the in moar s searching examination of newspaper file files fails to disclose any statement from either hoover dawes hughes or Lo longworth north while the farm bloc has discussed senator norris his hat s still on his head and not in the ring the thought was expressed by a certain washington newspaper representative senta tive that the curtis declaration mig might i nt stir some of the other candidates into a legal admission of their ambition but a week has now passed and nothing has happened the situation is confusing and extraordinary and it is also fraught with sonie some danger while all these gentlemen ale aie actuated in part by their thought that the office should seek the man rather than the man seek the office the truth is that our presidential nominating machinery in certain states at least has made this course impracticable in the state of maryland and in certain middle and far western states where presidential primaries prevail there is a statutory requirement that before the state can nominate a man he be must sign a declaration announcing his candidacy this is a phase ahas e of ane situation which is worrying vorn ying the practical politicians some of these gentlemen if they desire to be nominated will vill have to cross the rubicon I 1 hy by march and make a formal declaration unless this is done there is a possibility that an absolute unknown and impossible candidate can didat e may win stale st te votes by default |
