independence day celebration of 1927 to use ue the parlance customary at such such I 1 occasions went over big and according to the judgment of the proverbial oldest residents resident was one of the best ever held here having this enjoyable statement off our chet cheat che t let us go into the particulars AO those os e mostly interested in the affair felt mighty blue when they saw the skies gray in the morning anti and silvery rain drops threatened to spoil decorations floats and the costumes of the several goddesses queens fairies fes and so on but this gray blue silver ilver color scheme changed when the clouds disappeared and a spotless blue sky promised to assist the splendor of the festivities cannons boomed to open the day and the band serenaded to remind the people of our city of the sig significance aice of the day owing to the rain iain in the morning hours the parade was somewhat w hat delayed arid and did not start aart until about 1030 jut but it was for once a real parade joseph jo eph hansen a veteran of tile the spanish war acted with dignity as marshal of the day and two other spanish war veterans george hansen arid and jesse F bean were the cobor color guards accompanying the color bearer of battery E of tile the field artillery regiment chester olsen was an imposing representative of un uncle cle sam the b band and followed et and behind the boand marched the full contingent of our local battery un under der conin command tand of captain heliy E beal the floats came next headed by one depre representing enting the goddess of liberty miss rula ence and one representing pre benting utah miss mala poulson the float of the goddess goddes s was very elaborately decorated in fancy style while the float of utah represented in attractive manner the aag eagle gle gate at salt lake city the other floats which tool took part were vere very pretty the only trouble being that not enough of our business houses had sent floats to the parade those represented were the kindergarten designed and executed by our two kindergarten teachers misses nancy bird and viola ogden which deservedly received first prize movie land elaborately decorated by mr and mrs airs A L stallings received second prize the alie boy scouts who captured third prize the telluride power co J INI peterson co the richfield reaper the richfield commercial savings bank the utah oil co the richfield harness and shoe shop if some more of the business houses would have come out with floats the parade would have worked out still better much noticed in the parade also was a juvenile bicycle rider on a decorated miniature bicycle renee fournier nier after parading the floats assembled on the square between the j junior unior high school building and the armory where a patriotic meeting was held with mayor F G martines artines as master of ceremonies the band contributed several numbers in fine style bishop F M ogden clia chaplain plain of the day offered the invocation and benediction benedicti oft wane christonsen christensen read the declaration of independence and kenneth isbell was the orator of the lay day and surprised the listeners with a well bought out well conceived and well delivered oration on america first other numbers on the program were a male chorus a ladies chorus a solo by mrs L A poulson with mr anna callaway Oal laway at the piano and 0 rading ading r by miss vilda jessen all of tn bers exceptionally well ell rendered this concluded the activities of the tha forenoon at 2 p in ill the sports program for children and adults was pulled off on the city square the win winners were 26 25 yard dash clash for boys K and 7 years ralph gunn gulin first creal morrison second for girls 6 and 7 17 years darlene martines first ruth greenwood second for boys 3 and 9 years unknown this boy was so elated over the prize that lie he ran away before the judges could learn leam his name first henry beal tied with garn gam sly for second and after running 11 the tie off henry won 25 yard lash dash for girls 8 and 9 years D dot 0 t christensen first kathleen goodin n second for boys 10 and 11 years V huntsman first clyde hansen second for girls 10 and 11 years karma morrison first laurel jensen second 60 50 yard dash for boys 12 and 13 years don sellers first floyd olsen second 50 yard dash for girls 12 and 13 years athe dancing proclivities of Rich fields best crop an additional dit ional supply had to be brou brought lit in ill and when all was counted up it was found that kiddies had been served an added attraction for the childrens dance was a charleston performance forni for mance ance given by little dorothy Christo pherson at 4 a baseball game too took place at the city ball bah park between teanis teams of elsinore EI and richfield and again we refer to tile the above mentioned proverbial oldest residents resident who stated that it was one of the be best games g ames ever played here the particulars are given in ill another column of this at 6 water sports were conducted at the city natatorium iuni under direction of paul packard athletic coach at terrys terns band faithfully boiking biking Aoi oi king from early in the morning to late in the evening gave a very good band concert and then the crowd went to the natatorium grounds where on the west lulls hills fireworks of a beauty hard bar to excel were displayed the dance which concluded the festivities tivi ties was waa so well attended that we heard beard one of the participants say it was more of a football game than a lance dance not enough praise can be given to the general committee in charge of the celebration and their faithful helpers although we have mentioned these committees repeatedly we cannot refrain
