Show FOR BEET CHOP AS ains fly infestation not general but pretty bad in some fields of sevier county in interviews with entomologists anti and field executives of sugar companies we e learned that the chances for a satisfactory beet crop the coming fall are much better now than they were a week ago while some beet fields are so infested with the dreaded white hite fly that plowing them up has been found advisable and barley and corn com is now put in ill where this measure lias has been found necessary the infestation is not general and some fields show beets of so good a stand and so healthy a color that a good crop may be forecast provided weather conditions continue favorable the cold spring we had in our part 0 of f the state was decidedly beneficial and the heavy rain with which we were blest last sunday was a big help after the fields had been inspected by government entomologist edgar W davis who who is permanently stationed in richfield Kich field and dr E G titus entomologist of the utah idaho sugar company an appeal was made to the united states government to assist in the investigation and walter carter of the united states bureau of entomology stationed at twin falls idaho and in charge of the government fly investigation in utah and idaho has been delegated to give this assistance after a hurried survey mr carter gave the fol following loNing report 11 A hurried survey of boxelder Box elder cache weber davis salt lake utah sanpete and sevier counties reveals the fact that white fly infestation in boxelder Box elder and cache counties is negligible li an occasional field in weber county shows slight evidence of effects of white fly davis count county is practically free in portions of salt lake count county y and in nor northern thein utah county there are indications that the damage will be severe the same holds true for sanpete anti and sevier counties the whole infestation is so uneven and scattered that no general statement can lie be made for the infected area there is lio iio need hoever for general widespread alarm Ec excellent ellent cooperation has been established by the sugar companies and the various technical workers N and the farmers concerned are bein being individual individually lv advised as to conditions on their farms arms it is very much to be hoped that banners angiers will await information as to the conditions on their own farms and not take any hasty action based on onie ome neighbors condition which may lot hold at all for their farms every agency concerned sugar company officials fici als state workers and federal men are all anions to give farni farmers ens all the data available so that the farmers who ho are in danger may take suitable action officials of both the utah idalio idaho and gunnison Gun mon sugar coni companies panie announce that they aie keeping in close touch with conditions and where fields appear to be seriously damaged during the next week will advie adai the farmers to plow up the beets beet and plant to barley or other suitable crops |
