Show CAMPAIGN contributions thoughtful persons will stop ill this time of a general outcry against campaign expenditures to distinguish between money given for illegal purposes and money given legally and in good faith for the carrying on of the proper activities of political campaigns I 1 so much criticism has been directed recently against the spending of money for political purposes and the newspapers have so gotten into the habit of calling all political funds slush funds that the public is in danger of being misled into the belief that it is immoral to donate money to a political party and immoral for a po political 1 1 party to spend money nothing could be farther faither from fi om the truth all good americans re gadless of party disapprove of money given or pent for corruption in politics cb on this point there is no argument but because some choney money has been spent corruptly does not mean that all money donated for campaign purposes and spent by the great political parties luring during the campaign is slush money it is to be remembered that tile I 1 two great political parties ire are made up of the rank and file of our people everywhere they ale aie a pait of our represent representative active system of government and without them we could not have a leal republic the republican party and the democratic party have stood for certain well defined principles since their organization these principles embrace certain differences feren fere rices ces of opinion between groups of honest americans and thele ire are constantly new problems coming up on which the two parties panties must take a stand it is not only the right therefore but the duty of the republican anti and democratic oiga actions to their side of the case to the american people and aside bioni the outcrop pings of a fw few demagogues demagogue liere here and occasionally they per perform forin their tasks pretty well if the voters are to make a proper decision on oil public questions they must know what it is all about and the principal duty of the republican and democratic committees is to educate the voters so they will know what it is all about the committees do this by publicity stump speakers radio sp speakers eakers newspaper articles and pamphlets each committee is working for what it regards the best interests of the country as well as the party and doing this both aie per fo lining a real service to the nation now to do 10 this costs money and plenty of it it costs more money than it used to for various reasons in the first place there are more pamphlets lets anti and more speakers are required then again the general cost of living has ri risen rien en greatly tile the pat past generation and this has affected legitimate political living expenses as well as is legitimate private living expenses when we read an ordinary political pamphlet it doubtless strikes strike us as an inexpensive ve bit of information yet to send such a pamphlet to evera eveia voter in the united states would cost either of the national committees a million dollars the man or woman who lio honestly nestly believes in the principles of his or her party has a right to contribute to the camp campaign aien aign expenses of that party parts the party has a right light to accept the contribution and to use it for legitimate campaign expenses epen ses even large sums spent in this way are spent patriotically and not corruptly as the ribald demagogues demagogue of both parties would have us believe by all means let us stop the use of corrupt funds by corrupt politicians ians but let us be careful that at the same time we do not do an unconscious injustice to the republican or democrat who contributes to hs his party because lie thinks it is doing a constructive tive patriotic work and there are thousands of them |
