Show HOW THE U OF U TEACHES MACHES LANGUAGES through the aid of 0 extensive laboratory apparatus the students of the university sity of utah are enabled to loarn learn modern languages by the most recent and up rup to oda date methods according to professor james L barker head of the department of 0 modern languages at the university the laboratory Is fitted up with dictaphone and a tube listening system to assist phonetics and dictation native teachers dictate lessons upon the dictaphone records students dictate two or more lessons a week these are corrected by the native teachers who give recommendation as to improvement of pronunciation nuncia tion A great deal of work is done through this system of oral dictation grammar and composition work it has bon ben found that this new system is far in advance of the classroom methods formerly used extensive work in dictation and ph phonetics study is carried on for advanced students many delicate instruments st s aro in the laboratory for the recording of sound bound vibrations and the position of tongue lips mouth and jaws prof barker has recently returned from philadelphia where he gave two papers before the modern la language n association of america at the request of the government he is writing a book pronunciation of the foreign born which is to be used in the government americanization work the laboratory is perhaps the most extensive of its kind in the whole country continued mr arr darker barker it has hag been highly commended by experts who have visited the university ver sity 1 |
