| Show POTASH industry IS foreign importation of this valuable product would paralyze tile tho industry here congressional delegation IS APPEALED TO FOR AID Marls mar vale Ls will berender ed csele Uia eles 1 s anle unless the foreign producers producer are held in check believing the opening of foreign potash importations to this country would materially interfere with the development of the potash industries in this country the potash producers of this section are taking a decided interest in the threatened invasion of the potash markets lt it is pointed out that potash can be shipped from europe as is ballast at a low cost and sold here at a price that will seriously handicap tile the potash producers in this country the marysvale Marys vale deposits are among the largest in the world and any movement that would permit the flooding of the potash market from europe would be a serious menace to the plants in this section willliam E white the greatest booster marysvale Marys vale ever had has taken an active interest in the matter and has sent the following letter to the utah delegation in congress asking their support in heading oft off J any movement that would cripple the utah potash industry dear sir there is a matter of vital importance to a large number of your constituents to the state of utah and the nation at large to which I 1 beg leave to call your attention during all the many mining years of the marysvale Marys vale camp extensive veins of so called pink spar attracted the attention of the prospector and miner but numerous assay tests produced but a small odthe precious minerals and these veins were considered valueless then the cry for potash went up over the land and the government heeded the cry and sought sources of supply analytical investigation demonstrated that the pink spar was alunite carrying in percentage 10 potash 39 and 35 15 sulp sulphuric hurie acid steps were at once taken to explore these deposits and produce potash three extensive local plants have been constructed at an expense of many hundreds of thousands of dollars many thousands of tons of potash and fertilizers have been produced and one plant is steadily pro ducong and shipping tons per month of pure potash the veins are from 5 to 50 feet in width of great depth and length traversing many square miles of territory and are apparently inexhaustible the large active and prosperous town of alunite near marysvale Marys vale has been established upon and is being Hup supported ported by thib alunite industry and its hundreds of employees teams and trucks are securing remunerative employment because thereof potash po taah developments pent and miners in barch ar ch ot of b deposits ep and north ab h and east ot of marysvale Marys vale apparently inexhaustible haus bauB tible deposits of potash hearing bearing material have been discovered and located and some of which are now being worked and ores shipped while these deposits are perhaps not so high grade or regular in potash content as the alunite of the higher ramme yet with improved methods or of trent treatment ment now being devised by c 1 sis and other experts these there vast deposits li will undoubtedly become if they are not now commercially merci ally valuable and will be employed to enrich soils in many states of the union this great industry sprang into being at the call of the nation when war had left america without potash for essential industry art and medicine it would he be a crime against the nation to now permit this industry at home to be throttled and destroyed by cheap importations from foreign lands by ballast or otherwise and thus leave america dependent on the good will or caprice of foreign lands for her potash supply when fair protection and encouragement would make her independent and relf elf sustaining from her own god given stores the men also air 0 o who at their coun arys call for potash In invested their money their time and talent and made good are entitled to just consideration now after having established and maintained a great and essential industry communities that have built and nd established homes and industrial tips on the strong strength th of the continuance of this industry should not be sent adrift bv reason or of tb top de destruction st ruction of the industry wrought by cheap foreign labor or cheap transatlantic trans atlantic freights I 1 am rn mailing ailing a like letter to each member of our utah delegation in and we ask that in so go far ron grebs the members thereof a as 3 possible work in harmony nith other members of delegations like situated to the end that the american potash in be encouraged and maintained very truly yours WILLIAM E WH WHITE ITE it is the duty of everyone interested in ili the development of this section to lend a hand in preventing any interference with the potash industry |
