| Show THOSE amendments AMEND rENTS it is alleged that there thare will be an ail extensive campaign lodged against the proposed amendments to the state constitution by the mining interests of the state this will be a mistake on the part of the mine owners as there is no surer way to array those not directly interested in mines on the side of the amendments than for the mining men to cry out about ruining the industry by taxing the mines it is well known that the greatest source of wealth in the state is the mines and just as these are the source of 0 wealth so the average citi cen will believe they should be the most freely taxed the wealth produced by the large mines has not been made to bear its just share of taxation is the belief in the minds of most people in this state the average farmer cant begin to grasp the figures that these big corporations dally with the salt lake tribune has taken up the fight for the mining interests to the average citizen this will appeal as selfish because the names of big mining men in this state have always been associated with the tribune and the general sentiment will be that the tribune is not looking at the taxpayers side of the question but is making special pleading for its owners the thing tor for each citizen to do is stud study the amendments and and out for himself or herself whether or not the amendments are what the lawmakers claimed for them when they were framed to make the mining interests bear their just share of taxation with the farmers the manufacturers merchants and lay members of the community if this is really the aim they should be enacted into law if not they should be defeated the propaganda of the mining interests should not be relied on entirely it is a quest tion of individual effort to arrive at a just decision as to whether or not these proposed amendments are just and right both to the state and to the interests most directly affected it if they propose a direct injury to an industry they should be defeated it if they propose a relief to the state by securing revenue from a source that has not heretofore borne its just share of taxation they should be sustained A close study of the question Is demanded from every voter and no man or woman should evade this duty of investigating the question after all it Is the ability of the voters to weigh matters of state that Is in the balance there should be no blundering investigate the matter and vote your best judgment |
