Show OUTSIDE activities IN OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS the following article is from the pen or of J P saunders district agent for boys and girls club work in the salt lake schools Sel it is everywhere recognized that the people are arc not getting value received tor for the money spent in the education of their children under the present system any person who would make such a statement as ast this liis has either a very high estimate of the value of a dollar or a very low estimate of the teal real value of work do done 11 e 1 in n the schools today but that greater values should and can he be received in return for money expended there is no doubt men ano and women everywhere realize the school is not giving to the home 1 that needed assistance they feel fee is due instead of the school contributing its share to the home it is heaping burdens upon it INI clarys arys geography and johns problems prevent them from giving needed help in the home mother has the breakfast to prepare the dishes to wash the beds to make and the floors to sweep the best laboratory in the world is the home in the home but marys laboratory work is neglected she spends her time in learning many good things she studies about many real things but does not study them she reads about how to do things but is seldom found doing them she intends to wait until she has finished her education then she will put into practice th the c th thousand ou sand and one things she has lea learned rived many of which she has systematically forgotten but what sort of education is that that neglects the doing to a very great extent it is the education of today we have often heard it said sa id thai that we ve shall soon look back upon the education at af today and wonder why iby so much of our preparation for life was received within four plain walls but why stand we hero here idle dle what is it that we wish the system of which we ave now feel so proud must be changed so as to include the actual doing of more real things supervised projects and definite supervised home tasks for which school credit should be given now that we are fast eliminating the non essentials resorting to real live language lessons and common words in spelling and other reforms it seems a very fitting time for tile the introduction of outside activities that will help the home and correlate with the book work of the school and add many times to its elli clency As supt bupt beach of olympia bays the ille child should have home ionic work vork assigned to him but it should be work v ork pertaining to the home an and not pertaining to the school tiie the public must see to it that the things that the boy learns in school are tho the things that lie he will its use when ho becomes a man the course of study should bo be flexible enough to fit itself to the needs of the coin community and it is necessary for the community to see that the hie schools respond to this need one of the most important factors in the formation of strong and good character is responsibility lity and the child should early be given tasks to be performed regularly and lie he should assume the responsibility lity for the prompt and efficient performance of those these instead of asking the students to solve ten problems in it arithmetic arih wo we shall at no distant date suggest to him that h ha curry a horse or milk a cow that he build the kitchen fire and split wood enough to last through the day and I 1 believe that these will wip develop as much sound character and perhaps more originality and initiative than will the solving of a given number of 0 problems in arithmetic |
