scriptural reading and more praying in ill the family circle the visitors from headquarters apostle james E talmage who is known to tame fame as dr talmage a man mail of much learning and scientific le ie search who in spite of liis his science and learning has stuck to his church his theology and has not lot followed the lead of many of the cd scientists and wandered into by and forbidden paths adding to the interest and the gayety gaiety of the conference came J golden kimball whose off official iclal designation in the church is orie one of the first seven presidents of 0 seventies mr kimball deals with temporal and material things and lie he clothes many a splendid in homely and hilarious speech that takes the sting out of much of the elu chi dings lie he gives the people for their shortcomings with such a splendid team of talented gentlemen whose style differs as the sun and the moon but whose wit wisdom and teachings are worth while at any time it is little wonder that the conference was a success on saturday when the conference opened in addition to the two noted churchmen named president R D young and his counselor john christensen were present and took charge of the gatherings A number of stake high councilmen were also present tile the salina choir under the direction of james C jensen rendered the music luring during the two lays days and they sang many pleasing selections in addition to well known hymns salina has been eon well known for bears ears because of its choir and its performance luring during the conference was reminiscent of past days saturday morning ailing when opened the attendance was very small only about being present and in that number only four outside wards were represented and but one high councilman was present john christensen was the first speaker and lie he reported the stake as in good condition with all organizations izat ions in working order the two visitors occupied the balance of the time and both took occasion to point out that stake conferences could only succeed by the people being in attendance on saturday afternoon there was a decided increase in the attendance president young reported stake conditions as to bounteous crops and the work of conservation that is being carried out E W crane was called to the stand and lie he told of the great harvest in III the valley on his own farm lie he much attention is being paid to the denominational doctrine as there is to the training of 0 the children to better ways of thinking and living the whole spirit of education from tile the U S and all present were vitally interested in the account of the work and all endorsed the schoolhouse as the place for these teachings the speaker alcer urged that while it was the spirit of the american nation nadon that religion should not be taught in the schools he denied that this gave anyone the right to give irreligious training in the schools J golden kimball spoke for a short time and congratulated the people on oil the prosperity and abundant chops which were in III evidence on every hand lie he urged conservation and pointed out that while this valley and this state and in ions and con couched clied in language beautiful that could be enjoyed by all tic ile pointed out the need of more scriptural reading in the family circle he chided the people of 0 the stake lor for these shortcomings he pointed out two very startling 1119 stories from the book of kings and declai declared ed these writings to be accepted by historians as true and correct historical events he declared his belief in the bible and urged the people to give more attention to these scriptural accounts he emphasized pha sized the power and force thoin obedience and declared that some lay day tho the process by which obedience developed a power and energy would be understood during the afternoon session the choir sang lot let the mountains shout tor for joy my valley homo home and praise ye the father ail another musical number of note was a bolin solo by curg peterson james ill M peterson of the stake presidency was the closing speaker he urged the people to profit by the words of the apostle and to devote themselves more to prayer and scripture reading sunday E evening the M I 1 associations had charge of the sunday evening meeting presidents lance graham of the young men and louise chidester tor for the young ladies gave short talks on oil the work of the associations and J golden kimball told of need or 0 pure living among the young people he told many graphic incidents in his most delightful style and was eagerly listened to he decried the brand of religion that required a long face and urged cheerfulness and life the music was furnished by the richfield double
