rivers and lakes here in the sevier valley it opened with a loud report similar to the explosion of a jar of pickles on the pantry shelf in grandmas grandeas grand mas bungalow the opening had been anxiously looked for by a million or so of wild eyed and voracious anglers and on wednesday afternoon the mountain trails were being scaled by fishermen all intent upon reaching some favored stream or lake where gamy and truculent sper speckled kled trout are reputed to be lying in watt wait to welcome the visiting f nuts who bring them worms and grasshoppers and bottled goods and spinners to assist them in tiding over the high cost of living here in richfield there was a general hegira to altita binous spots A majority of anglers left here well equipped to spend a week or more at fish lake where fishing long ago became famous not only for the gaminess of its finny tribe but for the enormous weight frequently attained by many of the monsters who inhabit its deep and sparkling depths not everybody knows it but fish lake is steadily growing in reputation not only for its piscatorial excellence but for its scenic attractiveness and for the pleasure it affords the camper and the man who has an abiding love for the great out of doors every year it is visited by hundreds of pleasure seekers who go there in automobiles buggies and motorcycles and one of these days it ig 5 going to be one of the great playgrounds in the state of utah the lake teems with nearly a dozen species of trout all of which have been plan its waters by both government and state and they seem to thrive as nowhere else it does not require a professional angler an expert with the fly or spinner to make a record for even a novice catches his limit of fish as easily and as is readily as the professional some of the fish in the lake have attained enormous size it is not the skill in capturing them that counts for much but it is the skill displayed in landing them without capsizing the boat or drowning the fisherman the Mackinaw sare are the real leviah leviathans levi athans hans in the waters of the lake under ordinary conditions they reach huge size but in fish lake already many have been landed after a hard fight that would weigh as much as 35 pounds each the lake is fairly well populated with other large fish notably rainbow eastern brook and native salmon the latter often attaining a weight of ten and twelve pounds and are ugly and refractory creatures to handle still another species of fish which are becoming quite numerous are the steel heads among the gamiest of the trout family fish lake was the destination of many angl anglers ers who left here last wednesday but there were delegations of other fishermen who departed to near nearby by streams to tempt elusive brook trout with casts of artificial flies and seduce them from the pa paths of tude and right clear creek deer creek fish creek mill creek and other mountain brooks teem with these gamy and delectable liftee table fish the creeks are easily accessible and give sport to anglers who are familiar with the gentle art of making casts the sporting editor of the reaper joined a party of red blooded pis catoria lists wednesday morning who became the guests of C J malmsten manager of the golden rule store in this city and the tourists ventured into the eastern wilderness in quest and fried fish fresh air of big game the guests of honor were R J of gunnison and ira Malm malaten Malmst ten cn and the local newspaper man they had decided to visit the lake to that venture prelude but as a would make a side trip to daniels canyon in grass valley a wild and bugged defile noted for being the habitat i ui of big game and for the 11 1 of its scenery A i roaring creek alun plunges down this cleft in the hills and its waters are reputed to teem with fighting trout of splendid stories years past in been told of this catch catches es of fish have the canyon is indescribably stream grand in its rugged beauty blaut y wild flowers and ferns bluebells bluebelle blue bells stinging nettles and poison ivy prow grow within its depths attracting more than passing consideration it is a place where the nature lover and the nature fakir may enjoy wild life close up to creeping things and have pleasant dreams of the experience during months to come wood ticks infest the place and predatory skunks make fragrant the heavy atmosphere even rattlesnakes bask in the sunshine and seem to love the environments daniels canyon was named in honor of old man daniel a biblical personage who in early days gave free exhibitions with a group of performing lions camp was made about a mile up the canyon late in the evening and all 11 members of the party succeeded in in cIt catching ching a few well developed mountain trout which were prepared for the evening repast the canyon is is a lonely place and the hoot of a nocturnal owl adds to the loneliness fatigue courted sleep and at an early hour all had retired to their blankets thursday morning piscatorial duties les were resumed the fish were fat and lazy and they did not respond w with ith alacrity to the invitation to hook op on some very fine specimens of finny monsters were captured during the day however and in in the evening the pic knickers broke camp and resumed their journey to fish lake much has been written concerning the beauty and attractiveness of the fish lake region poets have raved of its loveliness and gifted magazine writers have made special vis visits its to the place to discourse in growing paragraphs upon its unsurpassed scenery and the of its setting it is an elevated plateau at an altitude of more than feet commanding a view of a vast area of mountain and plain and it is beginning to command respectful ful attention from all visitors who have had occasion to intrude upon its virgin wildness mildness ness the lake itself is a gem of purest ray serene a jewel in gorgeous setting and it must be seen to be appreciated at its true w worth orth the mountain sides are cloth wie fai pine s spruce pr uc e and aspen they descend to the shores of the lake in sheets of emerald green that lend enchantment to the eye each summer an increasing number of visitors flock to this wilderness to enjoy a limited outing and experience with camp life and they return to their homes with songs of praise and gladness concerning this natural playground which they have seen with their own eyes this summer there is noticeable an increased number of tourists who have sought the place to angle and enjoy life amon among g the primitive fast nesses lesses of the legion for the fishing is superb the shores of the lake are becoming a tented village resort hotels have sprung into existence 19 1 9 tence whose managers extend every cou courtesy reesy to visitors and one may benj enjoy oy life in this healthful invigorating fairy land at little more expense than if he had spent his vacation in city or town fish lake and its adjacent mountain sides at this time is the mecca of pleasure seekers and it has become a well district mr malmsten Mahn sten and his guests spent two days friday and saturday at the lake shore they enjoyed their im initial bial summer outing and were shown every courtesy by the resort managers manage rs and by the many visitors who had preceded them to the region they caught many choice specimens of large trout enjoyed enjoyer trips on the lake picnicked in shady glens gathered w wild ild flowers and spent their evenings in a tent with a board floor with a comfortable stove to radiate warmth and with electric lights whereby to per peruse use the pages of magazines and newspapers of recent date they owe much to charles the manager of the big resort at the lake who certainly did his best to make things comfortable and pleasant mr has done much in the way of building new roads to his resort and he deserves great credit for the work which is so plainly in evidence much of the travel to the lake this summer is by automobile and the trip is made without accident because of the excellent condition of the roads leading to the lake W L easton has erected a large and roomy bungalow on the shores of doctor creek a small near the south end of the lake and he and his excellent wife are catering to the needs of visitors by serving chicken and trout dinners dinner and providing beds and entertainment to all guests both he and mr are having excellent patronage at the resort boats are kept for hire and tackle and other paraphernalia are on sale the hotel is noted for the excellence of its cuisine its accommodations of every sort including sleeping and living tents its electric light service and the affability of its genial manager the reaper man met man many y f friends at the lake who were there from all parts of the country from f rom salt lake city from sanpete county and from Ri richfield clifield he observed that every visitor who has a predilection pred election for angling was catching his limit of fish soren christensen and P C nielsen were two big moguls in this respect and each had enjoyed rare sport glen neill consumed three hours in landing a 15 pound mackinaw and was an exhausted young man when last seen everybody was enjoying himself to the nth degree and nobody had occasion to prevaricate in the matter of the weight or the number of fish captured on the return trip to richfield another pleasurable restful detour was made to daniels canyon to accumulate additional wood ticks and more nettles and the day was spent there in meditation and prayer the trip was made in C J malm big chandler car which made the journey without mishap or in convenience it was a splendid outing not many fish were brought home because the largest ones were stolen by muskrats or other vandals and yet every one of the pilgrims smelled loudly of fish and perspiration when he reached this metropolis in addition he resembled a in of complexion for he was sunburned unshaven and unshorn and come to think about it he was dead tired yet he was happy because he had made the trip to the lake and had seen all there was worth seeing in the grand and mighty canyon of daniel |
