Show MID AND SCHOOL authorities WILL WAGE WAR ON FLIES STATE HEALTH BOARD OFFERS TIMELY ADVICE 10 CENTS PER HUNDRED BOUNTY will be paid by city council for all flies delivered to local health officer during month of april war has been declared on the house fly by richfield and no time is being lost in preliminaries it is a case of fight from the jump and judging from the systematic manner in which the forces are being organized against the pesky little enemy of good health he is doomed to defeat the state board of health calls attention to the fact that the fly is the most dangerous menace to the life and health with which mankind has toe contend being responsible for a large proportion of all cases of typhoid fever and diarrhoeal diseases of infants and many cases of tuberculosis and other conta contagious ious diseases this results from their habit of feeding on filth and discharges from the sick thus collecting and carrying disease germs to various articles of food and drink they have caused thousands of deaths in utah and will continue their work of destruction until the public awakens to the fact and binau gudates a warfare that will result in their extermination this can be accomplished definitely and effectively it means the removal of filth flies breed in filth and in filth alone without filth there can be no flies more than 90 per cent of them breed in stable manure and the balance in garbage outhouses out houses and other forms of refuse their development from the egg requires about ten days maggots are flies in the larvel stage the fly season is approaching prompt action at this time may prevent many deaths during the summer and fall and a grave responsibility rests upon all health officers and other citizens A an n immediate arid and thorough cleaning of premises should be effected and further accumulations of filth or decaying matter avoided stable manure should be kept in vaults or boxes screened or covered or fre sprinkled with lime or kerosene and should be removed at least once a week the city and school authorities have taken the initiative in a campaigne against the fly in richfield superintendent earl thompson has formulated a very effective circular letter on the subject which he has circulated extensively about the school district he is urging the teachers of the various schools to take the matter up with their pupils and patrons in order that united action may be taken throughout the entire district after a lengthy discussion by the city council that organization decided to do everything within its means and power to further the campaign A bounty of 10 cents per hundred for all dead flies delivered to the health officer during the present month was authorized |
