Show Importance Of Mining In a recent address, Herbert Hoover commented upon the economic importance import-ance of mining to Our Country. "ft is a vital part of our national Ufa, "said Mr. Hoover. "It is one of these industries without which the nation could not go on for a week. It ranks second only to the agricultural indus-tv indus-tv in its contribution to our raw mater ials. "Its production amounts to nearly 1 and one half billions annually, providing provid-ing direct support to probably 10 millions mil-lions of our people through employmenl of about two million workers. "But the industry has a greater importance im-portance than even these figures indicate, in-dicate, for with agriculture, forestrj and water power it furnishes the raw materials upon which the work of oui civil' nation rests. "When the raw materials of oui mines emerge from manufacture with the added expenditure of labor and caoital upon them, their wholesal' vp ! i if is over 15 billions of dollars. Atx in this, the second stage of their application ap-plication they give employment tc another two million workers and support sup-port to about 10 million more people. ...ianothero o.i aasat shrd etoa hrd cml "A large portion of these manufact u'-ed commodities must filter throw;! he retail trade, and their total valui v h"n delivered to the consumer exceed 2-'l billions of dollars. From this dis tni-u'ion comes support of many mon millions of people." Too great importance cannot be lair on our mining industry which spell.' economic prosperity, or disaster, fo thousands of communities. |
