Show WvilAKD STRAWBERRIES IN LIMITED GARDENS The strawberry is especially to be recommended for those with a limited amount of space who would like to grow a little fruit for their own use. J. H. Clark, associate professor of horticulture at the New Jersey College Col-lege of Agriculture, states that a hundred hun-dred plants "grown under favorable conditions will produce dessert fruit for a small family and perhaps enough more for preserving. Early plaining is advisable, the exact ex-act time depending ou the growth of plants in the old bed or nursery row. Plants should be bought from nearby growers if they can supply tiie varieties vari-eties desired so that they may be set immediately before drying out. The soil for the strawberry bed should be fertile and preferably a medium me-dium sandy loam, although any good garden soil will do. 'reparation of the soil should be us thorough us for any garden crop. I'or the average variety the rows may be -1 feet apart, with the plants IS inches apart In the row. Some varieties va-rieties may be set farther apart, while poor plant makers, such us Chesapeake, Chesa-peake, should be closer. Depth of planting Is important. Set the plant at the depth It was growing In the old btd, being careful uot to cover tne crown, and firm the soil well about tl.e roots. A good garden trowel is the only tool needed for planting It the soil Is well pulverized. Where plantings are small, it will pay to water wa-ter the plants when set. full up a little dry soil utter watering, to prevent pre-vent the formation of a crust. The blosfom clusters that begin to form in the spring when the plants are set should be cut out us early as i possible, so that all energy will go to ; strengthen the plant and to produce new ones. A year ufter planting, the main crop will be produced and a year later another fair yield may be secured se-cured If weeds are kept down und the ' bed well cured for. j The following varieties are suitable ' for growing in south Jersey: Campbell Camp-bell Karly, f render (Howard IT), Joe. Lupton, Chc.-'apeake, Aberdeen, l-'or j north Jersey, (lie following are reconi-' reconi-' mended: f render. Glen Mary, Joe, Success. Aberdeen, und Sample. The last named variety must be cross-pol-linuted by oilier sorts. |
