Show LEAVES ARE MONEY-DON'T MONEY-DON'T BURN THEM! . Le aves are worth saving for the value they yield as fertilizing material, ma-terial, according to Dr. Thomas L. Martin, Professor of Agronomy at the Brigham Young University. Dr. Martin urges that people preserve the leaves that fall in the autumn instead of burning them. On farmsteads, leaves may also be used for bedding animals. Otherwise, they should be composted. compos-ted. To make compost, proceed . follows: On top of a ' layer of leaves about twelve inches in depth, place about six inches ot . . soil. Saturate with moisture . and add other layers of leaves and siol in similar manner. It U highly important that the entire bed be saturated with moisture. In recent laboratory experiments Dr. Martin has found that poplar pop-lar leaves decompose more rapidly than other common varities. Next in order is horse chestnut, followed follow-ed by Norway maple, sycamore and catalpa. |
