Show Debasing; Cruelty In many persons there appears to be a well defined Inclination to crulety, especially towards animals, upon whlcn they Inflict needless suffering without with-out the slightest pity. In fact manv seem to take a fiendish delight In the agonies of unfortunate creatures. To one of normal sensibilities, It Is hard to explain this sort of depravity, which Is often found among children as well as among older persons. It must be a manifestation of animal instincts handed down from savage and brutal ancestors. Cruelty to animals Indicates In-dicates a certain baseness, which n.'i- ually includes cruel propensities towards to-wards human beings. Children should be taught early to avoid practices which tend to make them callous to the agonies of helpless creatures. It should be explained to tlinm that when It is necessary to kill animals for food or for the safety of human life, it should he done as swiftly and humanely ns possible; never Willi n desire to inflict pain. Teachers In school and Sunday schools might do a great d"al more than Is being be-ing done now In the way of humane education, while parents should especially es-pecially observe and endeavor to correct cor-rect tendencies toward crulety on the null of their chlldr n. |
