Show Oldest Skeleton Discovered Discov-ered In North America A skeleton of an ancient Indian baby estimated to have lived 10.-000 10.-000 years ago and mcidently the oldest yet discovered in North America is one of the rewards of a summer spent in field wotk by the University of Utah anthropology anthrop-ology department under the direction di-rection of Dr. Julian H. Steward An idea of the primitive state of civilization to which this child belonged be-longed is gained by a study of their weapons. Dr. Steward explains ex-plains that the tribe lived long before the invention of the bow and arrow and that they used the atlatl, or "throwing stick" to which wns attached a crude spear The interesting specimen was discovered dis-covered in the vicinity of Great Salt Lake and is one of the cut-standing cut-standing discoveries of its kind in the west. Other discoveries include a num ber of clay figurines or fetishes which the head of the anthropology anthrop-ology department explains were used by the ancient Indians as agricultural idols He further ex-Dlains ex-Dlains that these figurines bear a close connection to ' the ancient clay fetishes of central America. Dr. Steward spent most of his time this summer in the vicinity of Great Salt Lake and in the Uintah basin Mr. Dean Brim-hall, Brim-hall, President of the Union Pacific Pa-cific Airways sponsored cne scientific scien-tific expedition in which a search for caves was made from aloft. In other summers Dr. Steward has carried on extensive exploration explora-tion work in southern Utah and has been rewarded with a valuable store of reminders of a bye-gone age. |
