With virtually the entire south side inundated, flood waters of the North Canadian river rising rapidly and creeping relentlessly upward from the lowlands, already literally are lapping at the very threshold of the retail business center of the city. With every prospect that the crest of the high water will not be reached for some timev Sweeping savagely southeastward, the raging torrent, swollen to proportions pro-portions by rains which have fallen virtually without interruption for four days in the west and north central sections of the state, broke through the municipal reservoir 10 miles west of here early Tuesday and flung a pent up 25 foot wall of water downstream down-stream to spread further disaster to the already stricken lowlands on Oklahoma City's south side. This volume of water reached here about 4 o'clock Tuesday morning and within an hour had spread to within 13 blocks of the principal business section, both from the south and southwest corners. So far, there has been no loss of life reported, but numbers of persons are believed to be imperiled. A Bwirling current with a powerful power-ful undertow defeated efforts of firemen fire-men to reach 15 persons marooned In the Mulligan Grove district in the lowlands. Row boats were unable to breast the current and effect a rescue after earlier efforts had resulted re-sulted in the rescue of several persons. |
