Show A YARD Of HEALTH "I have just been kicked out of my last boarding house aui broke and out of a job because I have T. 13. ! What can you do for me?" Thus1 spoke a neat appearing middle-aged! business man as he came into ourj oflice tiie other day. His ghostly appearance betrayed the cause of his troubles. There was no doubt that he was a consumptive. The conversation conver-sation with him brought out the in-j in-j formation that he was alone in the 'world save for an aged mother in another state, who lived with a daughter barely able to support both. In alL Utah there is no public sani-torium, sani-torium, and no boarding house wants him or will give him admittance. "Why not send him to his folks?" you say. He has given 25 of the best years of his life to one of our cities and therefore has a claim on that community rather than the city of his relatives, who themselves are unable un-able to feed, clothe and wait upon J him. Is it not food for serious thought that we who pride ourselves ;upon our fine roads, progressive business busi-ness enterprises and wonderful natural na-tural resources have not provided institutions in-stitutions for the care and isolation of our own consumptives. The Priceless Gift. Is there anything in the whole rwide world you'd rather give your family than health? Is there anything any-thing else that takes the place of health? Did you know that by spreading heath in your city you give that priceless price-less gift good health to your ;family? And did you know that you can spread health, just as you can spread disease? ' Just a word now and then, spoken fit the right time, starts somebody to. thinking. Sometimes even a word isn't necessary. A tiny act may do as well. Your neighbor sees the act, wonders why you do it and unconsciously uncons-ciously begins imitating you. All the habits in the world, good and bad, are acquired. Why not try acquiring good health habits. Why not set the example to your neighbor so that he acquires the same kind of habits? Get the habit of covering your coughs and sneezes. That's the courteous thing to do, of course. It also is the sanitary thing to do. An uncovered cough or sneeze is mre deadly than a concealed weap-'.on. weap-'.on. Influenza was spread this winder win-der by the thousands of persons .who did not cover tueir cuoghs and i sneezes. - ' Talk fresh air and exercise. Practice Prac-tice what you preach and then watch how many of your friends follow your lead. Fresh air and exercise have prevented many an illness. The big problem of public health greater now than ever before In the history of the world is just spreading health instead of disease. Every person living is responsible for the spread of one or the other, whether he realizes it or not. Everybody can help to make his community health or he can remain indifferent and thereby help to spread disease. Never before in the world has there been a greater need for Dreach- jng and practicing the doctrine of health. The question has been presented pre-sented to America in its baldest aspect as-pect by the revelations of the war and reconstruction. Are you a doctor, a nurse, a health instructor, a teacher, a professional social worker, already enlisted in public service? Or are you just a plain citizen? Either way, you want to be well yourself, and you want your family and friends to be well. ' |
