Show On Manti National Forest. Forest Ranger D. H. Williams of Emery arrived in Ephraim February 25th. for a short detail in the Supervisor's Super-visor's office. Ranger Williams' time will be taken up principally with grazing matters during his stay in Ephraim. Ranger Olsen returned from the Seely Creek Ranger Station February 21st. He reports 16 inches of snow at the Seely Creek Station where usually at this time of the year there are several feet. The south slopes immediately below the Seely Creek Station are practically bare all the way down into Castle Valley. It does't seem that snow falls on the "Just and Unjust" alike, since there 'a much more snow on the west side of the mountain than is found fur- . ther east. The Manti Commercial club has requested re-quested the Forest Service to cooperate co-operate with them in the construction construc-tion of an automobile road through Manti Canyon to the top of the mountain. Forest Officers report an unusul-y unusul-y large number of coytes along the top of the mountain east of Ephraim. Quite recently several hundred baits were desposited around baiting stations sta-tions on Beck's and Tom's Ridges. The' workers at the irrigation tunnel tun-nel near the top of the mountain re- port a fall of 12 inches of snow Feb. 22 and 23. So far the workers have been able to keep the road open between be-tween Ephraim and the top of the mountain where the work is being carried on. ...j- The demand for lumber;- props, and other material was never greater great-er than at the present time. The Manti National Forest Wool-growers Wool-growers Association are protesting against the contemplated reduction in the number of sheep to be grazed during the season of 1920. Messrs. Compton and Bower ol the Bureau of Public Roads were in Ephraim, February 25 and 26, shipping ship-ping camp and road equipment from Ephriam to Orangeville where work ton that section of the road lying between be-tween Lower Joes Valley and the summit of the mountain under force account will commence immediately or at least as soon as weather con-daltions con-daltions will permit. Ranger Thorpe advises that owing to the extremely light snowfall this season it is now possible for horses to ,go over into Gooseberry from Fairview and that timber operations will likely begin in that vicinity at an early tlate. The first bond to be sumilled by the Treasurer of any Livestock Association As-sociation using the Manti Forest, was lurnisnea Dy iur. Isaac Aiireu, Secretary of the Emery Stock raisers Association, and reached the Supervision's Super-vision's Office on February 24. District Forester, L. F. Kneipp, and Ass't District Forester, Charles D. Simpson, of the Ogden Office stopped stop-ped off in Ephraim Saturday, Feb. 28, to check over our allotment estimates es-timates for the Fiscal Year 1921. The bridge plank which were taken tak-en from the road camp in Twelve Mile Canyon have been returned to the Ranger and the man who took (hem paid a $25.00-fine for borrowing borrow-ing them without permission. Inquiries recently have been received re-ceived from Idaho parties concerning possibile chances for timber sales on the Manti Forest. The interested parties are anxious to install a mill for supplying Emery County with lumber since they have found that 'a considerable part of the lumber used us-ed in Emery County is imported from outside of the slate. |
