The Observer says: i "President Wilson is proving himself him-self a born war leader. Now that he is committed, he is entering with absolute ab-solute energy and decision on a colossal colos-sal work of organization. He knows, as the whole republic now knows, ithat America can play no secondary part. It will require the utmost efforts ef-forts of the United States to beat me uew uopes ana ellorts of the central despotisms and to ensure such a political future as freedom must have or die. We are fully satisfied sat-isfied that the rapidity and thorough, ness of American action will astonish the world and make an ineffaceable impression on history. But at the very best it must be six months before be-fore the mighty effort of ships and armies under the Stars and Stripes can begin perceptibly to tell. Meanwhile Mean-while the brunt of the war by land, sea, and air must be sternly borne at any cost or sacrifice by Britian indomitable. in-domitable. On our shoulders for the fateful period immediately ahead will .rest the fortunes of civilization, and we shall know how to support them. France held on until Britian was ready. Britian must hold on until America is ready. The United States, by its mastery of railway transport and facilities in the Pacific, can do more than any other country to make Russia ready." One of the sneers which came from Berlin, before America's entrance in. to the war, was directed at the weakness weak-ness of this country. The German war staff said: j "Well, what can the United States do? The war will be over before the unwieldy forces of the republic can harm us." In less than a month, United States naval forces were in English waters and immediately there was a big dropping off in shipping losses by submarine attacks. Less than two months have passed and $750,000,-000 $750,000,-000 in credits have been extended to the Allies. Within another month, American troops will be on the western west-ern front, and, it would not come as a surprise, if the Stars and Stripes soon were floating over the trenches in Russia. As the Observer says, the United States may offer one of the biggest surprises of the world conflict. |
