Two dead and 38 Injured was the toll taken in the burning burn-ing of the High Point Community school house near here Wednesday, when the structure In which 09 children chil-dren were engaged in studies was destroyed de-stroyed by fire. A careful check today to-day showed that all the others had be?n accounted for and Identified. The dead were James Steele, 8-year son of John J. Steele, and the 8-year old son of Charles Bachelor. These pupils were In the room of Mrs. Oscar Grant, who heroically stood by the window and dropped forty children to the ground b--fore the floor of her r. om gave away, ard she was engulfed in the flames. She was unable to save the two boys who were lost In the smoke. Investigation Investiga-tion showed seventeen children were Buffring from broken limbs as a re-gul re-gul of the twenty-foot drop. A funeral party passing the school discovered smoke pouring out of the windows. The procession halted and the men and women of the party rescued many of the children. An overheated stove Is believed to have caused the fire. The school house was a two story frame building, build-ing, situated in a prosperous farming community. Authorities say the building build-ing had heen condemned as a fire trap more than a year ago and funds had been provided for a new fire proof building. The erection of the new school was delayed because of a dissension among residents as to its location. |
