Pleasant on April 8th. i committee consisting of the xecutive board of the associa-ion associa-ion and a special committee selected at the meeting Avas :hosen to represent the asso-dation asso-dation before the Board of, education. : The instructions! riven to the committee were to j irrange, if possible, to meet nth the school board at an arly date and discuss; first, . he early closing of schools: md second, the contracts for text year. It was the con-lensus con-lensus of opinion that the con-racts con-racts for the current year hould be fulfilled allowing the icliools to run the full scheduled schedul-ed time. I In reference .o inext year ihe teachers are opposed to a reduction in salary and to the uncertainty of the length of ;he coming school year, since i is indefinately stated on the jiew contracts. The Board of Education me! Wednesday, April 12th, and jave the committee from the leachers' organization privi-ege privi-ege to meet with them. The C!olloving teachers were pres-, nt: President C. L. Stewart,) Principal L. A. Petersen, and fe. H. Hinckley of Mt. Pleasant Pleas-ant High School, Principal G. V. Olsen, and Principal Merlin ladsen of Fairview, Principal Lee Allred of Spring City, Jrincipal F. R. Lamb and E. B. j arrett of Moroni, and Prin-j sipal Louis Petersen of Foun. ;ain Green. I In regard to the early clos-j ng of schools the Board took he position that it is financial-y financial-y unable to continue until the ;nd of the school year as call-; id for in the teachers' contracts. con-tracts. The committee pro-posed pro-posed that the final payment to teachers be postponed un-i til such time in the ensuing year that the warrants could jbe paid, but no change in its jformer action was taken by the Board. As to the contracts; for next year the .previous ' stand of the Board was maintained. main-tained. A counter-proposal of the committe to leave the 'closing of schools to the discretion dis-cretion of the Board and have no defmate length of the school year, provided no reduction was made in salaries, was also rejected. The committee felt that as long as the Board was safe-guarded in the matter of closing early without violating contracts, that the consession was not at all unreasonable. North Sanpete teachers are now about third from the bottom bot-tom in the matter of salaries in the state. This is true not withstanding the fact that although al-though there are only 2 per cent of the teachers in this district dis-trict uncertified, while the average for the state as a whole is 25 per cent uncertified uncerti-fied teachers. Furthermore, North Sanpete stands out alone as the' only district in the state where salaries are being given a blanket reduction. The situation sit-uation is serious since many of the teachers will seek other places of employment. Signed. North Sanpete Educational As sociation. |
