Show "LAWMAKERS HAVE A VERYJBUSY DA! RESOLUTION TO RESCIND WARTIME WAR-TIME LEGISLATION ADOPTED BY THE HOUSE. Farmers' Relief Measure Receives the Approval of Senate Members. The Johnson Immigration Bill Passes the House. Washington. Monday, liecember 13, was a day of accomplishment in the senate and house. Bepeal of most of the wartime taws was voted by the house, which adopted adopt-ed the Volstead resolution for lhai purpose after two hours' debate. The vole ou adoption of the resolution resolu-tion was unanimous, 323 votes being cast in favor of it and none opposed. The house, before taking the final vote, accepted an amendment providing for inclusion of the Lever food control act among the laws which the resolution would repeal. The amendment, which covers all 'provisions of the food control act, with the exception of the section relating to rents in the District of Columbia, was offered by Representative Bland, Republican of Indiana. It was carried 179 to 137. The resolution, which now goes to the senate, exempts from repeal only lie (ratling with the enemy act, the war finance act and its amendments, and measures dealing with the issuance issu-ance of Liberty and Victory bonds. The. senate passed the agricultural commission resolution directing the revival re-vival of the war finance corporation as a measure of affording relief to farmers. The second section of the resolution which, as introduced, would have directed di-rected the extension of liberal credits to farmers by the federal reserve system, sys-tem, was amended to make the desirability desir-ability of such a course only an expression ex-pression of opinion of the congress. The amendment making the change in the section of the resolution relating to the federal reserve system was proposed pro-posed by Senator Norris, Republican, Nebraska, and was accepted by a vote of 47 to 16. Another change made in the 1 resolution resolu-tion on suggestion of Senator Smith, Democrat, Georgia, broadened the duties du-ties of the finance corporation to include in-clude the financing of exportation of products other than those produced on the farm. The Johnson immigration bill as amended to prohibit all Immigration for a period of one year, was passed the house. It now goes to the senate, sen-ate, where its defeat is predicted by senate leaders. , The Siegel amendment, exempting brothers and sisters of aliens who have become American citizens, was approved, ap-proved, 203 to 76. |
